UNIT TEST – I

2 Marks
1. What is Bearing?
2. What are the desirable properties of bearing?
3. Mention the types of bearing?
4. How will you calculate the Heat generated in bearing?
5. What is meant by coefficient of friction?
11 Marks
1. Design a bearing and journal to support a load of 4 KN at 600 rpm using hardened steel
journal and a bronze backed babbit bearing. The oil viscosity is 250 s (Saybolt at 37.7°C
and specific gravity is 0.90 at 15.69°C. The bearing is relieved for 20 degrees from the
normal to the load line. Abundance supply of oil is maintained.

Or
2. An SKF 6205 ball bearing has dynamic capacity Cd = 10.8 KN. This bearing is used to support
a shaft which rotates at 300 rpm and carries a radial load Fr = 3600 N and an axial load of
Fa = 1500N. Calculate expected life of bearing in hours. Static capacity of bearing Ca = 6.95.
Assume inner race rotates.

UNIT TEST – II

1. What are the materials used for belt drives?
2. What are the types of belt drives you know?
3. What is belt sag and slip?
4. Indicate some merits and demerits of belt-drives.
5. What is meant by mechanical drives? Classify them.
11 Marks
1. An open flat belt drives connects two parallel shafts 1.2 m apart. The driving and driven
shafts rotate at 350 rpm and 140 rpm respectively and the driven pulley is 400 mm in
diameter. The power to be transmitted is 1.1 KW. Design the drive.
Or

2. Design a V-belt drive and calculate the actual belt tensions and average stress for the
following data. D=500 mm, d=150 mm, C=925 mm, N1=1000 rpm, N2=3OO rpm and
P=7.5 KW.
