WHAT IS A STRIKE: When workers have tried every other means of gaining their rights, a

livable wage, safe working conditions, health care, sick pay . . . . . they refuse to work until the
employer meets their needs, or at the very least a credible compromise.

WHAT DOES IT MEAN FOR WORKERS WHEN

THEY STRIKE: Workers on strike do not receive
paychecks. There may be some funds available in a strike fund, if the
workers have a union. But these funds are limited, and are used for
emergencies or to assist workers with a small portion of their usual pay.
When the strike fund runs out they get nothing. Workers only go on strike
when the situation is so bad that they are willing to go without pay - to
demand justice.

WHAT IS A BOYCOTT: A boycott is when the community supports the workers by not supporting the
company that is refusing to compromise or negociate with the workers. Not buying a
product, or not shopping in a store are common ways to boycott a company, thus forcing the
company to treat the workers with respect and dignity.

WHAT IS A PICKET LINE: A picket line is striking workers and supporters posted at
the business to inform the public of the dispute and requesting that we not support the
business. There is also an imaginary picket line between you and any product or company
that is being boycotted, this picket line is your conscience.

WHY WE NEVER CROSS A PICKET LINE OR BREAK A BOYCOTT: Because it would support large
corporations at the expense of our friends and neighbors who are the workers, and whose well being is at stake.

SCAB: A scab is a person who crosses a picket line and accepts work, replacing a striking worker during a
strike. Scabs are used by the company to keep production or services going so the company will not lose
money during a strike. Scabs weaken the workers’ ability to demand fair wages, safe and healthy working
conditions, and benefits from the company.
