CRANES, HOISTS, SLINGS


Cranes, hoists and their corresponding slings and chains make heavy lifting and easier
and more effective method to lifting heavy materials. Though these methods are easier there
are dangers that can come with these types of equipment. Proper inspection will limit the
likelihood of injury. OSHA has outlined many guidelines in order to keep those operating and
working around this equipment safe.

Slings
 Slings, rope, cable and chains can all be
used with cranes and hoists. It is specific to
the type of hoist are crane being used,
they are rarely interchangeable.
 Slings and their fastenings and
attachments must be inspected daily
before they are used.
 Any damage to any of these, i.e.
permanent twists or fraying in ropes or
slings, crack or breaks in chains or cable
must be immediately replaced. (1910. 184)
 Inspection must be done daily by operators
and worker. A monthly inspection must be
performed by someone who is certified on
a monthly basis, these will be done by
recording dating and a signature by the
inspector (1910.179)

 All functional mechanisms, air and
hydraulic systems must be inspected daily.

 Unsafe conditions disclosed by the
inspection requirements must
be corrected before the operation is
resumed.
 Control panel must be clearly marked for
identification of function and operation

 The load rating must be CLEARLY marked
on all cranes and hoist. Weight limits are
not to exceed these marked limits.
