MANAGEMENT CONTROL SYSTEM - FINAL PROJECT GUIDELINE

The final project report is a group project and an important part of your overall mark for MCS
module (15% of your overall score). The objective of this project is to help you identify,
analyse, and understand the implementation of management control systems in a company
setting. Two companies are chosen for this assignment, which are:

1. PT. Merapi Arsita Graha (www.merapiarsitagraha.com)

2. Larissa Aesthetic Center (www.larissa.com)

Both companies have headquarters in Yogyakarta, while owning branches in other cities
around DIY and Central Java. Please go to their website for more information.

You are expected to do a thorough analysis on these aspects:

1. Strategy of the company

a. How the company translate their vision and mission into strategy?
b. How is the strategy perceived by division or units? Same across divisions or
not?
2. Business environment
a. Use the analytical tools you have learned to evaluate the business
environment
b. Be resourceful and search for market data. If you do not find any, try to do it
through observation and from any data that is available to you
c. Example: SWOT, Porter Five Forces, BCG Model
3. Management Structure and Business Process
a. Identify the management structure and chain of command of the organization
b. Identify the main business process of the organization
c. Business process involves operations, control
4. Performance Measures
a. How the organization measures performance of their divisions and units.
b. Analyze the measurements and the strengths as well as challenges.
5. Conclusions and Recommendations
a. Analyze information you have gathered
b. Make use of the MCS theories you have learned in class
c. Give your remarks on how to enhance the control system in place

The final project report should be:

1. Put together in a coherent and concise manner. Structure and section and
subsection need to be clear and linked to one another. Use meaningful sentences.
2. Approach the report as if it were a research. No plagiarism of any form is permitted.
3. All recommendations and tools of analysis are based on reliable references.
4. Make use of the MCS theories you have learned throughout the course!
5. Data collection on the project approach you will take. Mainly it is going to be from
interview and secondary data.
The format of the final project report should follow these guidelines:

a. Word-processed in Times New Roman, font 12, 1.5 spacing

b. Word limit: 3.000 words (+/-10% range of tolerance)
 What is included in word count?
Main text, including in text citations, and quotations
 What is NOT included in word count?
Appendices, title page, tables, figures, legends, reference list,
acknowledgements
c. Up to 4 pages of appendices
 DO: Use graphs, charts and tables;
 DON’T: make text-extensions

So that the presentation of the essay should have:

a. Appropriate use of tables, graphs, charts, and pictures.

Make sure your graphs, charts, and diagram are appropriately reproduced, numbered,
formatted and referenced. Be sure to refer to the diagram in the text.
b. Formatting (space, margin, font) is consistent
c. Text is clear and readable, no typographic errors and spelling mistakes
d. Text is within the maximum word count

The final project report should be submitted on you final examinations via SINTESIS. Late
submissions will be accepted but will be subject to a cut of 50% from the initial score.

Please make sure that everyone in your group is working on the project, no free-riders
allowed. You can come to me directly if such matter exists.
