Experiment name: Temperature measurement using PT-100.

Theory:

PT- 100 is a resistive type temperature sensor where PT means platinum-tungsten and 100 means the
ohmic value at 0◦C. PT-100 sensor usually have 3-wire or 2-wire. If it is 3-wire sensor, among 3-wire , 2-
wire (same color) are internally connected and 3rd wire (different color) will show the ohmic value of the
sensor.

Let, X1= fluid temperature measured by thermometer= 25◦C (room temperature).

X0= 0◦C.

So the ohmic value of the PT-100 sensor at 0◦C Y0= 100ꭥ. What would be the ohmic value of the sensor
at 25◦C (room temperature)?

Apparatus:

1. Thermometer to observe the room temperature.

2. PT-100 sensor.
3. Digital multimeter.
4. Experimental sheet & graph paper.

Working procedure:

1. Observe the room temperature by thermometer & the measurement value is X1=?? (say 25◦C)
2. Observe the ohmic value of the multimeter Y1=?? (say 112ꭥ).

3. From the PT- 100 we know ohmic value 100ꭥ at 0◦C. So, X0=0 and Y0=100.
Calculation:

From the straight line equation we know,

(X-X0)/(X0-X1) = (Y-Y0)/(Y0-Y1)
Or, (X-0)/ (0-25) = (Y-100)/(100-112)
Or, X/-25=(Y-100)/-12
Or, 12X= 25Y-2500
Or, X= (25Y-2500)/12
Or, X= 2.08Y – 208.3
Say, temperature, X= 50 degree centigrade then ohmic value, Y= 124.18 ohm.

So, gain or sensitivity of sensor is 2.08. If we know any one of these variable, then we can find
another one.
