Use "a" before a consonant sound: a nurse

Use "an" before a vowel sound: an architect

A noun is a person, place or thing.

Proper nouns
The names of people and places are proper nouns. Use a capital letter to begin a proper noun.
Examples: Joe, Guatemala, Africa, Empire State, Mexican.

Common nouns
Other nouns are common nouns. Use a lowercase letter to begin a common noun.
Examples: afternoon, school, dog, teacher, book.

Syllables are sounds we hear, in each word.

Syllabication Rules

Rule #1
Every syllable has one vowel sound.

Rule #2
The number of vowel sounds in a word equals the number of syllables.

Rule #3
A syllable word is never divided.
