Examination into misconduct risks in WA prisons

February 2020

Why is the CCC holding a public examination into misconducts risks in WA prisons?
In 2018, the Corruption and Crime Commission tabled six reports in Parliament that identified
misconduct and misconduct risks in WA prisons.

We made 51 recommendations in total to the Department of Justice for organisational changes,

including the implementation of a corruption prevention framework, review of policies and procedures,
and improvements to screening, drug testing and training of staff. These reports received significant
public attention.

In deciding to hold a public examination, the Commission has carefully balanced the public interest of
the wider community, the potential for prejudice and the privacy of individuals involved.

The Commission has concluded that public interest will best be served by public examinations.

What is the purpose of these examinations?

The Commission will hold a public examination to look at the actions taken by the Department of Justice
in response to its 51 recommendation.

The examinations will also provide the Department of Justice an opportunity to rebuild public
