WEEK 8-10 : SHIP STABILITY ASSESSMENT

This three weeks will be allocated for assessing the stability of your ship. Ship stability is not very new to
most of you as you have learnt it in NA I and NA II and Design class I. Hence I am not going to teach or tell
you step by step how the stability assessment task to be carried carried out.

Instead, in this design task I am implementing the learning method called “Problem Based Learning”, PBL.
Problem that drives learning process. I will pose the problem and you will need to solve the problem. In
solving the problem, you need to learn the theory, formula, methods of solving the problem. You, as student
will take charge the learning process, I,.e, you will have to;

1. Indentify and understand the problem corretly

2. Identify the necessary knowledge that you need to know to solve the problem
3. Acquire the knowledge from various sources
4. Learn and understand the knowledge
5. Apply the knowledge to solve the problem
6. Report the answer

The lecturer will only coach you, and not to teach or solve your problem. Hence no lecture will be given (only
briefing if necessary).

So what is the problem ?

DOES YOUR SHIP HAS ADEQUATE STABILITY ?

From this BIG PROBLEM, you need to break up to smaller problems /questions eg;

- What is ship stability ?

- How do we know the ship is stable or not
- Where can I get the theory, formula, rules etc
- How I do carry out the calculation task
- Etc, etc

For each question above (and many more questions that you are going to generate), you have to carry out
the 6 learning steps above.

PBL is the true and best learning process. It reflect excatly the real world scenario. In real life, we are always
need to solve the problem, and don’t expect someone will sit next to you and teach you how to solve it. You
need to solve it one way or another. PBL exercise will enhance your problem solving skills, hence make you a
better person – remember EDUCATION !!.

So what will be my role as lecturer ? – Just to COACH you to ensure you are in the correct track. I will call
upon each group during the design class, and questions you what have you done and tell you whether you
are in the correct path or not. That’s all.
