SECTION 256
RIPRAP AND AGGREGATE CUSHION

256.01 GENERAL.
This work consists of furnishing or salvaging, and placing stone on slopes, channelways,
or other areas.

256.02 EQUIPMENT.

256.03 MATERIALS.

Quarry Stone
816.02 A.2.h Commented [nah1]: Are these the same tests we would
perform for Quarry Stone?
Wire Mesh 836.03 C

A. Grout.
Proportion grout using one part Portland Cement and two parts sand by volume.

B. Riprap.
Use fieldstone or quarry stone as riprap.

1. Gradation.
Size (Inches) Percent Smaller
28* 80-100
22* 30-80
16 20-50
10 0-5
* The Engineer may allow up to 10 percent of the total stones to be oversized, if
they can be blended into the riprap. Do not use oversized stones greater than
6 inches larger than the specified thickness.

2. Field Stone.
Do not use fieldstone that:
 Consists of sandstone, shale, or soft limestone
 Contains cracks or flaws that would cause splitting or breakup
 Or is easily abraded or crushed

3. Quarry Stone.
Provide quarry stone that consists of materials other than sandstone, limestone, or
stone of sedimentary origin.
256.04 CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS.
A. General.
Place the stones on sloped areas beginning at the toe of the slope. Dig a trench
at least one foot deep and place the largest stones in the trench, filling gaps with
smaller stones. Compact the riprap and provide an even, tight surface.

B. Aggregate Cushion.
Spread aggregate cushion over the specified area before placing the riprap.

C. Wire Mesh Riprap.

Enclose the riprap on all sides using wire mesh.

Place strips of wire mesh:

 Parallel to the length or direction of the riprap Commented [jr2]: What does this mean?
 With end splices that are staggered a minimum of 10 feet Is it intended to be in the longest dimension of the area to be
 In lengths not less than 10 feet long covered?

Tie adjoining strips with wire every 18 inches. Tie lower layers to upper layers
with wire ties spaced 2 feet center to center longitudinally and transversely.

D. Loose Rock Riprap Commented [nah3]: General Section states that we

Place the rock by mechanical means or by hand. compact the riprap, do we compact loose riprap?

Distribute stone evenly over the riprap area:

 Without segregating the stone
 Without deviating from Plan slope and grade by 6 inches

E. Grouted Riprap
Wet riprap before applying grout. Recess the grout 1 to 3 inches below the top of
the riprap.

256.05 METHOD OF MEASUREMENT.

The Engineer will measure, completed and in place, as specified in Section 109.01 and
as follows.

A. Loose Rock Riprap.

The Engineer will measure loose rock riprap in the hauling vehicle.

B. Aggregate Cushion.
The Engineer will measure the actual surface dimensions of aggregate cushion and
multiply the surface area by the specified depth to determine the cubic yard quantity.

The Engineer will not measure aggregate cushion thickness.

C. Grouted Riprap.
The Engineer will measure the actual surface dimension of grouted riprap to
calculate the grout quantity.
The Engineer will measure Rock used for grouted riprap as specified in Section 256.05
A.

The Engineer will measure the riprap and grout separately.
