centred on transforming the learning experience of
our students. Designed by RIBA award-winning and
Stirling Prize nominated Grafton Architects, Town

The difference we make
We are committed to research which has
impact and changes lives. Here are some of the
stories of how our research brings beneficial
change to people and communities.

Business and Social Science

Combatting online hate
Extensive research looking at the impact and
risk factors of cyber-bullying led by Dr Muthanna
Samara, Associate Professor in Psychology, has
shaped UK national and local policies on online
safety education for vulnerable children. His study
has transformed the ways in which major charities
such as Barnado’s work to protect vulnerable
people from online risks.

Health, Social Care and Education

Enhancing patient and carer relationships
Our researchers have developed a therapeutic
engagement questionnaire to enhance
engagement between service users and providers.
Involving users of mental health services, our
research has helped service users contribute to
decision making in relation to the quality of care
and treatment they receive. Adopted by the Chief
Nurse of England, the tool has been validated by 26
Mental Health NHS Trusts in the UK, as well as by
national health systems in other countries.

Kingston School of Art

Diversity in UK Craft
A collaborative research project with the Crafts
Council is exploring how working with materials,
craft and design can help us to understand, rethink
and critique socio-cultural issues. The study uses
material imaginaries to explore the understanding
of diversity & difference and the politics of making
as they relate to African diaspora identities and
experiences in the UK.

Science, Engineering and Computing

Protecting clean sport and health
Professor Andrea Petroczi’s world leading research
into anti-doping in sports is playing a key role in a
major European initiative to educate young fitness
and sports enthusiasts about the dangers of
doping and ways to avoid falling victim to the perils
of performance and image-enhancing substances.
Her work has led to SAFE YOU, a milestone
project in recreational and amateur sports, and to
the development of World Anti-Doping Agency’s
official anti-doping programme ALPHA: Athlete
