Design & Analysis on

Suspension
24 October 2018

Abstract

Suspension is the system of springs, shock absorbs and linkages that connects
a vehicle chassis to its wheels and allows relative motion between the two.
Suspension systems must support both road holding/handling and ride quality,
which are at odds with each other. The tuning of suspensions involves finding the
right compromise. It is important for the suspension to keep the road wheel in contact
with the road surface as much as possible, because all the road or ground forces acting
on the vehicle do so through the contact patches of the tires. The suspension also
protects the vehicle itself and any cargo or luggage from damage and wear.

The Objective of our project is to design and analyze the whole suspension
system which include coil springs. First based on the ride rate, wheel rate and motion
ratio we calculate the spring rate. Then with the help of it we set the dimensions for
the spring. Then CAD modelling of the spring is done using SOLIDWORKS. Then we
do modal analysis for springs for control arms using ANSYS Workbench (19.2).

Introduction

By observing vehicles, a vast variety in designs is easily noticed. Off-Road

vehicles usually have a stiff and light structure, whereas On-Road vehicles have wide
tires, a strong frame, and a front fork with suspension. So apparently the design
depends upon the area of use, and even within mountain bike design the variety is
great.

In recent years the number of different Off- & On- Roads designs has increased.
This is caused by the constantly present urge from riders to overcome even rougher
terrains and steeper hills, while keeping a high level of comfort and safety. As a
consequence the full suspension mounted vehicles has been brought in to focus.

The optimal performance of the suspension depends on the technical and

physical prowess of the rider, and the range of use the rider expects from the vehicle.
Riders exercising All Mountain and Down Hill, which include steep drops and high
speed, require full suspension to soften the uneven tracks, allowing them to go faster.
Riders exercising Cross Country and Marathon, which include riding in forests, on
hills and on dirt-roads, require light and energy efficient vehicles with less travel and
better adjustment of the suspension characteristics.

Major Uses of Suspension:

7
1. The vehicle suspension system is responsible for driving comfort and
safety as the suspension carries the vehicles body & transmits all forces to
body and the road.
2. To maximize the friction between the tiers and the road surface.
3. To provide steering stability with good handling.
4. To ensure the comfort of the passengers

Goals & Objectives

Goals:
Our Goal is to design and analysis of a suspension based on the usage of
vehicle to sustain rough terrains, so that it gives the best optimal performance.
