A. Review
Can you still recall the figures of speech that we had discussed?

Identify what figure of speech used in each sentence. (Simile, Metaphor, Personification
or Oxymoron)

1. The wind whistles in my ears.


2. My teacher is like a diamond because she is precious to us.
3. Dr. Blesilda V. Floro is a wind when she works at her office.
4. I silent scream when I saw a bug flying after me.
5. The sun smiles at me.

B. Motivation
Teacher will post a sentence on the board.

Read the sentence posted on the board.

“The man was unafraid of his neighbor so he built high walls around his house.”

When a person is un afraid of his or her neighbors what do they usually do?
Will they build high walls around his house?
What conflicting ideas presented in the statement?

C. Presentation
Today we will learn another figurative device called Irony.

D. Discussion
Irony is the disparity or inconsistency between what seems and what is the meaning.
Words are used in a way that the intended meaning is different from what is actually
meant or a contrast between what is expected and what really happens.

Example Sentences

The shoemaker wears shoes with holes in them.


(What does a shoemaker do? What are his/her expertise?)

Someone living on a desert keeps a boat in her yard.


(Have you seen a picture of a desert? Can you describe what it looks like? What is the
weather condition when you are on a desert?)
It rains on a day a group of weather forecasters has scheduled a picnic.
(What job does a weather forecaster do?)

Someone walks out in the midst of a hurricane and say, “Nice day”.
(Have you seen a hurricane? Is it dangerous?)

E. Drill
Identify the irony in the sentence by identifying the words or phrases that shows
contrast.

1. He is so short; he bumped his head on the ceiling.


2. She is a great singer that she sings like a cow.
3. The car drove too fast so I got home late.
4. Alex can’t read, he just finished the whole chapter 1 yesterday.
5. This is out lucky day! We got stuck inside the elevator.

F. Generalization
As a recap of our discussion, how can we tell if the sentence is an Irony?

Read the following sentences. Draw a star if the sentence is an Irony and heart if it’s
not.

1. The Mansion Hotel is very durable, the engineer found some cracks after the 6.5
magnitude earthquake. (star)
2. The man built high walls that can be easily climbed by intruders. (star)
3. President Duterte show gratitude to the volunteers of typhoon Ursula. (heart)
4. She is as smart as her grandmother in terms of business. (heart)
5. She’s a good driver, she caused traffic. (star)

Pick out the words/phrase that shows contrast in each sentence.

1. My classmate is known for her straightforward speaking that lasted for two hours.
2. My neighbors are too wealthy that they cannot afford to buy a piece of bread.
3. The expert surgeon failed on his kidney operation that made the family so sad.
4. Joana, who is a four-time champion on the swimming competition, was drowned by the
river.
5. The policeman got robbed.

V. Assignment
Write at least 10 sentences with Irony on a ½ crosswise.
