1. Only one sperm is needed to fertilize the egg. Why does nature provide so many?
The egg is protected by a layer that has to be penetrated by the sperm. And it actually takes a lot of sperm cells to each take
a little nap at the layer before - eventually - one of them is the one to break through. The moment the egg is penetrated by
a sperm cell, it closes up so no other can enter. It is much like a piñata, where a lot has to hit it before one lucky bloke can
be the one to tear it down.
