Andy Warhol- The Complete Picture 2002


 Birth Name- Andrew Warhola (Slovakian)
 Born- August 6, 1928 Pittsburg, PA
 Died- February 22, 1987 New York, NY.
 Was worth 600 million dollars at death.
 Was dyslexic and developed at nervous disorder as a child due to bullying @ School.
 Andy Warhol Museum Located in Pittsburg, PA- Opened 1994
 1949- Moved to NYC as a Commercial Artist.
 Was extremely close to his mother.
 Andy was Homosexual (or “Gay”)… and had an intense love for SHOES! 
 Opened 1st studio at “Serendipity Cafe” in 1954 which was owned by 3 gay men.
 In 1960, He started using “Pop Art” & “Abstract Expressionist” ideals.
 He changed the art world by changing what art “was”= everything was recognized! Mass produced products
were considered art too.
 1st official art show in 1962- featured Campbell’s soup cans, later started screen printing celebrity portraits.
 When Andy opened his Studio “The Factory” he started creating art with mass production ideas and hired
helpers.
 His work became more gruesome & started printing gruesome real-life photos.
 He later started producing films… He said it was “easier”… and created portraits with the film.
 Edie Sedgwick was a young actress associated with Warhol and he called her “his superstar”.
 In 1968 he relocated “The Factory” and many of his friends from the original location became drug addicted and
died.

 On June 3rd 1968 Andy was shot by Valerie Salanas a worker at the factory, came to work and shot him. (She
wanted to marry him!... remember he was gay!?!)
 Andy was truly an example of the “American dream”… and “American disasters”.
 He single handedly coined the quote “in the future, everyone will be famous for 15 minutes”.
 After being shot, Andy “upgraded” his factory workers by employing “upper class” people because he was
afraid of what “drugies” would do.
 The upgrade caused him to start doing society portraits for very high prices. (people liked his “style”)
 In the mid 1970’s he transformed INTERVIEW magazine and became an author with assistants.
 Amazingly Andy attended church almost EVERY SUNDAY!
 He LOVED the flea market.
 Andy even had a robot to be made just like him…. This was actually the start of animatronics.
 In 1987, Andy was modeling and suffered a gallbladder attack.
 He admitted himself into the hospital as “Bob Roberts”.
 Andy died of complications from the gallbladder surgery- He was 50 years old.
 Coincidentally he had been painting LOTS of religious scenes before his death.
 The religious body of work happens to be the largest religious body of work of ANY American artist.
 He also had an extensive cookie Jar Collection.
 Andy was best known for his Illustrations, Prints, Paintings and Films.
