Topic/Session Unit 1 Session 7: Studying Digraphs in Names

Overview Connection:
 Yesterday we learned about blends, where two letters sounds are so
close together that they stick. Does anyone remember any words that
we learned that have blends? Let's look at our blends that we learned.
Teaching Point:
 Today we are going to learn that when some letters are next to each
other, they transform and make new sounds, these are called digraphs
 Letters can work together to make new sounds
Active Engagement:
 Let's look at some letters that make a new sound when we put them
together
 Take notecards with the letters “c” “p” “s” “t” “w” and “h”
 Create combinations and find the new sound together
 Brainstorm words that start with that sound
 Uncover the word on the chart that the digraph is in
Rug Club:
 Now it’s your turn. Use your own notecards to create combinations
with your partner.
 Think of what words have this sound in it. Look at this chart if you
need some ideas!
 When I see you making letter combinations and finding the new
sounds, I will give you a name and you can find the missing digraph
 Come back together, let’s look at the names and what digraphs you
found!
 Look at the names. What digraphs do we need to add to make
these names? Ask rug club to share, ask student whose name it
is if it is correct.
Link:
 Today and every day you can use digraphs and blends to sound out
words when reading and writing.
