SITE INSTRUCTION PROCESS fates « J SUILDERS SLUMP TEST PORATED | VER 1 Page 1 of 11 SIP-TST-008, INTRODUCTION Concrete slump test or slump cone test is to determine the workability or consistency of concrete mix prepared at construction site before concrete pouring. Concrete slump testis carried out from batch to batch to check the uniform quality of concrete during construction. Workability is the property determining the effort required to manipulate a freshly mixed quantity of concrete with minimum loss of homogeneity. The slump test is the most simple workability test for concrete, involves low cost and provides immediate results. Due to this fact, it has been widely used for workability tests since 1922. The slump is carried out as per procedures mentioned in ASTM C143 in the United States, IS: 1199 - 1959 in India and EN 12350-2 in Europe. Generally concrete slump valueis used to find the workability, which indicates water-cement ratio, but there are various factors including properties of materials, mixing methods, dosage, admixtures etc. also affect the concrete slump value. 1.0 PURPOSE This will serve as guidelines for proper procedure in conducting Slump Test & what will you do if slump test failed. 2.0 SCOPE This paper will focus on Standard Test Method for Slump of Hydraulic-Cement Concrete, 3.0 APPLICATION The slump test method is intended to provide the user with a procedure to determine slump of plastic hydraulic-cement concretes only. This test method was originally developed to provide a technique to monitor the consistency of unhardened concrete. Under laboratory conditions, with strict control of all concrete materials, the slump is generally found to increase proportionally with the water content of a given concrete mixture, and thus to be inversely related to concrete strength. Under field conditions, however, such a strength relationship is not clearly and consistently shown. Care should therefore be taken in relating slump results obtained under field conditions to strength. This test method is considered applicable to plastic concrete having coarse aggregate up to 1 1/2 in. [37.5 mm] in size. If the coarse aggregate is larger than 1 Rapidstee! Clean the internal surface of the mold Get a bucket of water and moisten the surface of the slump plate and the inside of the slump cone, to keep concrete from sticking to it. Clean the internal surface of the mold with the use of steel brush and apply oil. Fill the mold with the prepared Standard Sample of Freshly Mixed Concrete (as per ASTM C 172) in about 1/3 of the total height of the mold. Tamp 25 times using Tamping Rod to remove air voids and make sure to cover all the surface area inside the cone, slightly angling the rod to get the edges. Do not tap the side of the cone, because that causes artificial subsidence and your slump will come out higher than it really is. Rapidstee! Builders Incorporated {5 Tocong Roa, Bray. Measure the slump Measure the difference between the height of the mold and that of height point of the specimen being tested. Measure from the displaced center to the rod, and record the slump to the nearest quarter of an inch. The entire slump procedure needs to take place in 2.5 minutes. Clean your equipment and discard the used concrete. If the slump is out of spec, perform a second test to be certain, and then tell the site superintendent if both slumps were out of spec. Results of Slump Test on Concrete Slump for the given sample=_mm. Acceptable Slump for various cases: a. Concrete coming from pump (say the RMC truck can’t pour concrete directly for there are obstacle along the way and concrete needs to be pumped) acceptable value is 6” (152 mm) ~ 8" (203.2mm) of slump. b. For Direct pouring of concrete the acceptable value is 4” (101.6 mm) to 6” (152 mm) of slump If the slump is less than 4” (152 mm), the concrete mixture is OVER DUE. Lack of workability which results of air voids. If the slump is higher than 8” (203.2mm), wait for a few minutes to semi harden the fresh concrete and test again. Rapidstee! Zero Slump — Zero slump is the indication of very low water-cement ratio, which results in dry mixes. These type of concrete is generally used for road construction. Collapsed Slump This is an indication that the water-cement ratio is too high, i.e. concrete mix is too wet or it is a high workability mix, for which a slump test is not appropriate. Too high slump result will cause segregation of grout and aggregates in concrete mixture during pouring. Low cement ratio will cause low concrete strength. Shear Slump — The shear slump indicates that the result is incomplete, and concrete to be retested. Too low slump result will cause lack of workability which means too hard to spread during concrete pouring and will cause air voids. Rapidstee!
