GRADE LEVEL QUARTER / DOMAIN Day and Time PAGE NO.

8 4th Quarter 1

4I. OBJECTIVES

A. Content The learners demonstrate an understanding of the concept of a species

Standards
The learners should be able to report (e.g., through a travelogue) on the activities that communities engage in
B. Performance
Standards to protect and conserve endangered and economically important species

The Learners should be able to explain the concept of a species; S8LT-IVg-19

C. Learning
Specifically at the end of the period, the learner will be able to:
Competencies/
Objectives
Write the LC 1. Describe sponges and cnidarians;
code for each 2. Classify animals as sponges and cnidarians; and
3. Appreciate sponges and cnidarians by giving its importance/roles in the environment.

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Let us review first of what we discussed yesterday

What topic did we discussed yesterday Yes_? Yesterday we discussed about the animal kingdom,
Sir.
Very good?

Again, who can define invertebrates and

invertebrates?

SPONGES AND CNIDARIANS

The kingdom of Animals is divided into two

groups which are invertebrates animals
those without backbone and vertebrates
animals, those with backbone.

We will going to discuss about Sponges

and Cnidarians, these organisms belong to
the Invertebrates animals. The sponges
and cnidarians represent the simplest of
animals. They were the first animals to
evolve from a multicellular ancestor

concepts and First we will tackle about Sponges.

skills #1
Have you ever double-bagged your
groceries? If so, you have an idea of what
a sponge look like- a layer, or sac, of cells
with in another sac of cells.

What are sponges?

Simplest animals, belong to Phylum

Porifera. The word "porifera" means pore-
bearing.

They are very diverse and come in a large

variety of colours, shapes and structural
complexities.

They range in heights of 1-200cm and in

diameters of 1-150cm.

They have partially differentiated tissues,

and not true tissues and don’t have internal
organs, muscles, a nervous system, or a
circulatory system.

Can you break apart a sponge into its

individual cell? Yes_?

Very good, we can break apart the sponge

into individual cells and those cell will come
together again to form a sponge.

Lets proceed to the structure of Sponges

The structure of a sponge is simple.

One end is attached to a solid such as
a rock while the other end, called the
osculum, is open to the environment.
Sponges are able to get
microorganisms such as algae and
bacteria for food through openings.
Some sponges are carnivorous and
use their spicules to capture small
crustaceans.

Let’s have an activity. Please count 1-4. And (Students will count 1-4 and group themselves

What is their Importance to the

Ecosystem?
Yes, Sir
Sponges are important in nutrient cycles in coral
reef systems. Scientists believe they may be
important factors to changes in water quality,
whether good or bad. Scientists analyze how fast
sponges breathe and the amount of nitrogen they Yes Sir, mammal is a warm-blooded vertebrate

skills in daily First, these bacteria may be able to create forms of
living nitrogen from the nitrogen gas in the water that may
be nutritional for the sponge. They may also be
able to turn ammonium from the sponge’s breathing
into nitrogen gas that is then released into the
atmosphere. This process would lower excess
nitrogen levels in coral reefs, also preventing
harmful ecosystem changes. Scientists believe that
