4I. OBJECTIVES

A. Content The learners demonstrate an understanding of the concept of a species

Standards
The learners should be able to report (e.g., through a travelogue) on the activities that communities engage in
B. Performance
Standards to protect and conserve endangered and economically important species

The Learners should be able to explain the concept of a species; S8LT-IVg-19

C. Learning
Specifically at the end of the period, the learner will be able to:
Competencies/
Objectives
Write the LC 1. Describe sponges and cnidarians;
code for each 2. Classify animals as sponges and cnidarians; and
3. Appreciate sponges and cnidarians by giving its importance/roles in the environment.

Teacher’s Activity Student’s Activity

Let us review first of what we discussed yesterday

What topic did we discussed yesterday Yes_? Yesterday we discussed about the animal kingdom,
Sir.
Very good?

A. Reviewing Animal kingdom is divided into two groups, what

or presenting the
new lesson Very good answer. Invertebrates and invertebrates Sir.

Again, who can define invertebrates and

invertebrates?
Sir, the invertebrates are those animals don’t have
Do you have any questions and clarifications about a backbone while vertebrates, they have backbone.

None, Sir.

Since you already have an idea about Animal

B. Establishing a Kingdom, before we start our new lesson, I have an
purpose for the activity. I need 5 volunteers. As you have seen in (The students will arrange the word/s correctly on

Let’s give them a three claps

Based on these words in the board, we will

SPONGES AND CNIDARIANS

We will going to discuss about Sponges and

Cnidarians, these organisms belong to the
Invertebrates animals. The sponges and cnidarians
represent the simplest of animals. They were the
first animals to evolve from a multicellular ancestor

First we will tackle about Sponges.

Is anyone here already seen a sponge?

Can you describe a sponge?

Yes Sir.
Yes, very good
D. Discussing new
concepts and Sponge has a pore Sir.
Sponges:
practicing new
skills #1
Simplest animals belong to Phylum Porifera. The
word "porifera" means pore-bearing.

They are very diverse and come in a large variety

of colours, shapes and structural complexities

Here is the picture of a sponge. (Posted on the

Board) .Take a look.

.Characteristics of Sponges

 They live in Aquatic environments, mostly

marine (shallow and deep oceans)
 Body shape can be cylindrical, vase-like, \
rounded or sac-like.
 They have multi-cellullar body; have
partially differentiated tissues, and not
true tissues. They have no organs.
 The body has many pores called the ostia
and a single large opening called
osculum at the top.

Take a look at the pictures, do you see where ostia

and osculum located?

Very Good.

 The body of a hard sponge is supported

by a “skeleton” called spicule., made of
either glasslike silica or calcium
carbonate.

Look at the picture again, this is a spicule.

 Sponges are sessile. The young of

sponges are motile, while adults are
attached to solid materials like rocks.
 Reproduce sexually or asexually, sexual
reproduction can be either gonochoristhic
or hermaphroditic.
Gonochoristic is having one of at least two distinct
Who know here the word gonochoristic and sexes and retain that sexuality throughout their
hermaphroditic? Yes lives while hermaphroditic is possesses the
reproductive organ in both sexes,
Very Good.

 Sponges are filter feeders.

Has no nervous sytem

What is Sponges Made of?

Sponges are made of four simple and independent

cells. These are:

1. The Collar cells, which line the canals in the

interior of the sponge. Flagella are attached to the
ends of the cells and they help pump water through
the sponge’s body. By pumping water, they help
bring oxygen and nutrients to the sponge while also
removing waste and carbon dioxide. 2. The
porocytes, which are cells that make up the pores
of the sponge. Epidermal cells form the skin on the
outside of the sponge.

3. The amoebocytes exist between the epidermal

and collar cells in an area called the mesohyl. They
carry out functions of the sponge and help transport
nutrients. They also form spicules, which are the

sponge’s skeletal fibers. They work together with

the collar cells to digest the food for the sponge and
produce gametes for sexual reproduction.

Examples of Sponges:

Any questions about sponges? Clarification?

Reactions?

If none, let’s proceed to our second topic.

CNIDARIANS

They are members Phylum Cnidaria consist of

animals whose tentacles contain stinging cells
called nematocysts.. these poison-filled structures
are used for defense and to capture their prey or
food. Once released, this can be painful and even
fatal like an attack by jellyfishes.

Cnidarians share certain common features:

They have nematocysts (stinging cells)

They have radial symmetry (cutting planes

through the center creates identical segments; they
E. Discussing new have top and bottom but no 'sides')
concepts and
practicing new They are carnivores (they feed on smaller
skills #2 invertebrates)

They have no organs or organ systems (just tissues

containing specialized cells grouped together)

They have no brains but have nerve impulses

running through their body and are able to detect
signals from the environment

Cnidarians are classified into four main classes

according to their body forms and characteristics,

Examples of Cnidarians:

1. Corals form colonies of various colors and

secrete a hard skeleton. These accumulate to form
coral reefs which are of great importance as they
are one of the world’s most productive ecosystems.
A coral reef is where a fishes and other marine’s
organisms breed.

What are the importance of Sponges and

Cnidarians to the Ecosystem?

Cnidarians are extremely important in ecology of
tropical and temperate oceans in the form of corals.

Corals provides habitats and food for many species

of fish and invertebrates

Reefs protect the land from ocean waves.

Think about what you learned in class today about

animal kingdom.

What is animal Sponges? Yes_? Sir, Sponges is the implest animals belong
