DESIGN CALCULATIONS FOR SINGLE PILE

Date: 14/12/2014

Date given for design:

 Pile type: Bored Cast-in-situ pile

 Pile material: RCC
 Load on each column: 1450 kN
 Dimensions of column: 300 x 600 mm
 Grade of concrete: M30

Assumed data:

 End bearing resistance of rock: 1500 kN/m2

 Frictional resistance of rock: 125 kN/m2
 Socketing length: 5 times pile diameter

Design Assumptions:

 Contribution from top soil strata has been neglected during calculations.
 Pile is designed as purely socketed and end bearing pile in rock.
 Vertical Pile capacity is calculated based on above given and assumed data.
 As per IS permissible lateral deflection at pile head 4mm

DESIGN CALCULATION

Vertical Pile Capacity:

Effective length of pile = Length in overburden + Length of socket in Bed Rock.

Load carrying capacity by static formula as given in IS 2911

Qu  Ap b  Asi f

End Bearing Component = Ap b and Friction Component in Rock = Asi f

Qu = 1450 kN .(Given)

From this data, Pile diameter = 0.7 m = 700 mm

Pile Capacity in Tension (Pullout):

Pile tension Capacity = f x Pile capacity in friction + Submerged weight of Pile

= (0.5 * 1963) + (4.23*1.5)

= 987.8 kN

(' f ' is the reduction factor as recommended by Tomlinson, M.J. in "Design and Construction of
Pile Foundations", Chapter 6.2.2, Page No. 213.)

Lateral Capacity of Pile:

In absence of relevant data it can be assumed as 5%. = 72.5 kN (for a permissible lateral
deflection of pile head = 4 mm as per IS 2911 )

Recommendation:

For the above given and assumed data, a pile of 700 mm diameter with socketing length of 5
times diameter should be provided.

In absensce of data, pile should be terminated as per the ‘pile terminating criteria’ given relevant
IS code.
