Rome and Religion: A Cross-Disciplinary Dialogue

7/01/2009
8:30 AM to 12:00 PM
Room: C215 - GU
The SBL is co-sponsoring this session with the Society for Ancient Mediterranean Religions. The
session is part of a three-year inquiry that began at the 2008 meeting in Boston and will continue at
the 2009 New Orleans annual meeting. The goal is to bring together classicists, biblical and religious
scholars, historians, and archaeologists to discuss the study of religions in a Roman context.

Karl Galinsky, Professor at the University of Texas and the 2009 recipient of the Max Planck
Research Award for his study of history and memory, initiated the cross-disciplinary conversation in
Boston with lecture titled "The Roman Cult of the Emperor: Uniter or Divider?" Exploring both
theory and method in the study of texts and material culture, the respondents included Steve Friesen
(University of Texas), Robin Jensen (Vanderbilt University), James Hanges (Miami University) and
the president of the Society for Ancient Mediterranean Religions, Barbette Stanley Spaeth (College of
William and Mary). Galinsky’s paper and the responses are available in electronic form at
http://socamr.wikispaces.com/. Attendees are encouraged to read these papers to facilitate the
discussion on the study of religions—including early Christianity—in Rome.

Theme: Jonah: Why Me? Send Someone Else

Jonah is a short novella which describes a person who was commanded by YHWH to preach for
repentance to the inhabitants of the Assyrian capital, Nineveh. The novella presents a dramatic story
whose primary purpose is didactic, showing YHWH’s care for humanity and not just for Israel. While
the story is certainly not an historical work, this literary fiction need not have been written merely for
the sake of pleasure. We could ask whether it were a parable, and as such it contains a deep meaning
and teaching concerning a struggle between human and natural phenomena. If it is a parable it would
appear that the moral is ;”No one can flee from a true mission in life or from destiny. Whoever
attempts to run away from it experiences great difficulties.

7/01/2009
1:30 PM to 4:00 PM

Theme: Crossing Borders: Organizing Women Scholars in Europe and the U.S
In this session, panelists will engage in a U.S.-Europe dialogue. Also, people from different contexts
within Europe will speak more specifically about professional life in their situations. In particular, the
question is about organizing women in different types of networks, such as the CSWP: what's
happening? How effective in changing our situations, or the field, is getting women scholars together?
Can Europeans and Americans work together in some way that would benefit both?

Whence and Whither?: Methodology and the Future of Biblical Studies

7/01/2009
1:30 PM to 4:30 PM
Room: T302 - GU

Theme: “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”: Cinematic Representations of
(Biblical) Rome
From Federico Fellini’s 1969 film “Satyricon” to the epic television series “Rome”, broadcast
between 2005 and 2007, the depiction of historical Rome is a recurring theme within visual culture
over the last 60 years. Recent publications (e.g. Richard Wrigley’s edited volume Cinematic Rome
[2008] and Monica S. Cyrino’s Big Screen Rome [2005]), similarly point to the sustained interest in
representations of Rome. The modern world is critically engaged with these ancient representations.
Do they tell us more about our world or the ancient world? And how do we know the difference?

Theme: The Rhetoric of Violence and Ancient Community Identity

This panel seeks to understand the frequent connection between violence and the formation of
community boundaries as reflected in sacred and other literature of the ancient Mediterranean world.
The papers in this session consider the relationship between violence and community identity as
manifested in a variety of ancient and biblical texts and interrogate the various and complex ways
violence operates in the formation of group identity through violent rhetoric, revenge fantasies,
apocalyptic judgment, curses, calls for Holy War, etc.

Implementing the Toledo Guiding Principles: Educating for Religious Literacy

7/03/2009
3:30 PM to 5:00 PM
Room: C008 - GU

Kent Harold Richards, Society of Biblical Literature, Presiding

Silvio Ferrari, Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe, Panelist

Shabbir Mansuri, Institute on Religion and Civic Values, Panelist

In various European nations, policymakers and educators are grappling with how best to integrate
ethnic and religious groups within the respective national fabric. Whether it is the U.K., France,
Germany, the Netherlands, or the Balkans, regional educational efforts are potentially tied together
through the work of the EU's Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights and the
implementation of the "Toledo Guiding Principles on Teaching about Religions and Beliefs in Public
Schools." The development of such guidelines is a relatively new phenomenon in Europe, whereas in
the U.S. since the mid-1990s the work of the First Amendment Center and its partners has helped
propagate such guidelines nationwide. This panel will introduce the "Toledo Guiding Principles" to
SBL meeting attendees and raise the possibility of invoking civic and constitutional foundations for
the accurate and meaningful study of diverse faith traditions.
