Princess Playmates: Rescue!

CGT 390 Audio

Emily Hill
Concept:

In this project, the player will be playing through an educational, children’s point and click

adventure. In the adventure, a little girl named Princess asks the player to help her find her

friends: Tofu the Dog, Sully the Sheep, and her “Bestest Friend”. The player goes on an

adventure to find the dog and the sheep with Princess. However, they are unable to find her

other friend. This prompts Princess to be confused, responding with “You haven’t seen him? I

thought you would know where he went, since he’s your brother and everything. How long has

he been missing now?”.

The game then “glitches” and switches to first person, where the player character gets

up from the computer they were playing at. The environment around them is scattered with

elements from the educational game. The player character realizes that it was not just a game,

their brother is actually missing. The player then searches around for their brother, with the level

ending when they find their brother’s baseball cap lying alone on the ground. It is left up to the

player’s interpretation as to who the enemies are. Are they the characters seen in the game, or

is it an unseen force?
Maps:

The first half of the game will be a point and click game where the player clicks the

environment on screen to advance. Dialog and narrative information will appear in the bottom

menu, with collected items showing up in the side panel. Characters will appear on screen to

talk, before disappearing again.

The map shown above represents the second half of the level. The player will navigate

through the area as sound effects are triggered. Once the player reaches the end of the level,

an ending cutscene will play and the level will be completed.

Gameplay:

The first half of the level will be played as a 2d point and click adventure. The player will

advance through dialog and click on different objects in the environment to look for Princess’s
missing friends. As the game goes on, things may become more cryptic and out of place,

alerting the player that something isn’t quite right. After the transition into first person, the player

will be in a 3d environment, where they will navigate through the area attempting to find their

brother. The level triggers an ending cutscene when the player finds their brother’s hat.

Audio:

Sound Effects: The point and click part of the level will feature many bright and upbeat

sounds to make the player feel like they are playing through a children’s game (clicking on

objects, advancing text, hovering over objects). By the end of the first level, these sounds will

become distorted and unpleasant as the game becomes scarier. The first person section of the

game will feature sound effects that are typically found in horror games, providing a creepy

atmosphere (turning a corner, flickering lights, stuff falling).

Voice Acting: Featured voice acting will include upbeat and childish voices for the first

half of the game. The second half of the game will feature a scared main character in the ending

cutscene and various scary voices.

Music: The music included will be childish and repetitive throughout the first half of the

game, becoming more distorted over time. The second half of the game will not feature any

background music, but rather background noise to provide a creepy atmosphere.

Implementation:

This project will focus largely on audio design. The art style for the first part of the game

will be pixel art, and will be personally created. The art style for the second part of the game will

feature a 3d environment made through kit-bashing (all credits will be given to the proper
creators). This level will be developed as a solo project over the course of four months, with the

potential to expand the project afterwards. Programs used will include Unreal Engine 4,

Audacity, and Piskel.
