There are more than a million words in the English language. A single word may be pronounced
in different ways by different people. The spelling of an English word does not necessarily tell
you how to pronounce a word. Therefore, phonetics, the study of speech sounds, with the use
of phonetic transcriptions, is essential. Phonetic transcription is the visual representation of
speech sounds, which consists of symbols.
As a first time learner, you may feel that the phonetic transcriptions are confusing but once
you understand how to use them to speak better, you will find them very interesting.
Similar to the English alphabet, Phonetics follows a slightly different phonetic alphabet. They
consist of 20 vowel sounds (12 monophthongs and 8 diphthongs) and 24 consonant sounds.
SYMBOLS
[‘] Used to indicate which part of a word has to be stressed i.e. with extra force.
e.g. for the word alarm, the stress occurs as a’larm.
[:] Used to indicate the length of the sound that is pronounced.
e.g. for the word feet, the phonetic symbol is /fi:t/, where the symbol [:] is used to indicate
length of the sound.
[.] Used to indicate the pause between the sounds in a word while pronouncing.
e.g. for the word marble, the phonetic symbol is /ma:.bl/, where the symbol
[.] is used to indicate the pause between the two syllables.

JACKIE CHAN
S.No. SENTENCES
Jackie Chan was 5.5 kg when he was born (1954) and his parents named him ‘Chan
2 Kong-sang’ which means ‘born in Hong Kong’.
When the movie industry began to fail, Jackie was forced to go to Australia to live with
5 his parents where he got the nickname “Jackie” (in a construction work site).
When Jackie was 7 years old, his father moved to Australia and left him at the China
6 Drama Academy where Jackie lived 10 years.
A telegram from a man called Willie Chan arrived asking him to return to Hong Kong.
7 It was a call to act as an action hero. This changed everything! Now, Jackie is 150 films
old with Willie as his good friend and manager.
Now When he graduated from his school, the Chinese opera was not popular anymore. As
8 Jackie was never taught to read and write, he did stunt work.
He is also a very rich man now; but he donates a lot of money and has even announced
10 that his son will not inherit his money. All his wealth will go to charity!

DOLPHINS AND SHARKS
S.No. SENTENCES
1 Sharks! Sharks have several rows of teeth, whereas dolphins have just a single row.
Dolphins are called social because they are playful with people and have helped many
2 struggling swimmers to shore. A shark, if it finds a struggling swimmer, would happily make
a meal out of him!
Sharks are fish, they breathe through gills and their skeleton is made of cartilage (softer
3 than bone).
Though sharks may have more teeth that may help them in hunting, dolphins are much
4 more intelligent and social than sharks.
This exercise is all about the two sea animals: sharks and
6 dolphins.
9 Now that we know only dolphins have bones, who do you think has many teeth?
Though they have the same side fins, dorsal fins and stream-lined bodies we can
10 conclude that they are both actually quite different!
