GRAPHICAL PRESENTATION OF PROCEDURE

1. Dry enough amount of sand in oven at 102-105 degrees Celsius and weigh the sand every
10 minutes.

Dry sand
Set oven at 102 – 105

Weigh sand every 10 mins

2. When stable reading is obtained, remove the sand from oven and place it in a desiccator
to cool.

Remove sand
from oven Let the sand to cool

3. Screen sufficient dry sand (bone dry) to approximately 2000 mesh using sieve shaker to
fill the four drying trays to a depth of about 10mm each

Bone dry sand

Fill the four drying trays up to

10mm each
4. Weigh accurately the dry sand that will be loaded to four drying trays. Also, weigh
accurately each empty tray.

Bone dry sand

Weigh the dry sand and the
empty drying tray separately

5. Place the sand on a suitable container and saturate it with water.

Add water to saturate

the sand

6. Remove the sand from the container and drain the excess free water.

Remove sand first then

drain excess water

7. Load the sand on a evenly and smoothly into the drying trays, taking care to avoid any
spillage. The total weight of the wet sand should be noted before drying commences.

Evenly spread sand in drying trays Note the total weight of wet sand before drying
8. – 9. Record the temperature and pressure of boiler, inlet and outlet steam line of the drier.
Record the weight of sand, wet bulb temperature of entering and outgoing air, velocity of
air, and temperature (7 locations) of the preheated air every 5 minutes until the weight of
the sand becomes approximately constant.

DATA TO RECORD:
1. Boiler temperature and pressure at
inlet and outlet steam line of drier
2. Weight of sand
3. Wet bulb temperature of air at inlet
and outlet
4. Air velocity
5. Temperature (7 locations) of
preheated air every 5 minutes (until
weight of sand becomes constant)

10. Repeat the experiment but using sand of the 200 microns grade.
