Abstract

The finite element method was already a well-established tool for the analysis of a wide
range of problems in science and engineering. Indeed, its ability to model complex geometries in
a systematic way put it far ahead of its competitors in many cases. This assignment is done by
referring to the journal and article of the past studies related to the problem solving and current
studies. The objective of this project is to solve the Boundary Value Problem in engineering
problem area such as Mechanical, Electrical and Biomedical engineering by using Finite
Difference Method (FDM). In past has study that boundary conditions are when more than one
value of the independent value is involved in a situation. One of boundary value type is the
differential systems. Basically, the boundary value problems can be solved by two techniques
which are shooting technique and finite difference method. Both techniques have its advantages
and disadvantages respectively. The finite difference method is the simplest and oldest method
to solve differential equations. MacLean has claimed that a numerical finite difference method is
to calculating the fluid and metal temperature distributions for the periodic-flow type heat
exchanger, accounting for the effect of the heat conduction in the wall in the direction of fluid flow.
We use both implicit and explicit method to solve the problems. Explicit method is to calculate the
state of the system later from the state of the system at the current time while implicit methods is
to find a solution by solving an equation involving both the current state of the system and the
later one.
Conclusion

The purposes of this assignment was to determine the Solution of Boundary Value
Problems (with applications in engineering problem) Using Finite Difference Method (FDM).
Based on result on the table 4.1 and 4.2, the temperature on both nodes are decreasing when
the time increase. The result obtained from the implicit is close to the result obtained by the explicit
method. Note that either method could be used to obtain satisfactory results to transient problems,
except, perhaps, for the first few time steps. The implicit method is preferred when it is desirable
to use large time steps, and the explicit method is preferred when one wishes to avoid the
simultaneous solution of a system of algebraic equations.

Recommendation

There was recommendation for the solution of Boundary Value Problems (with
applications in engineering problems) using Finite Difference Method (FDM) in MATLAB solution
which is GNU Octave software. It can handle powerful mathematical syntax and is equipped with
plotting and visualizing tools. Apart from that we can use Scilab wherein it can easily analysis the
data. Lastly, we also can use other than implicit and explicit method to solve the problems method
which is by using shooting method.
