The objectives was to study correlations of metabolic syndrome with cognitive disorders in
elderly patients aged over 70 years, hospitalized in the Vth-Geriatrics and Gerontology Health Clinic,
Iasi, Romania in 2014-2018.
Methodology. The prospective study was conducted on a total of 150 patients, mean age 72
years, and pursued the relationship of possible association between metabolic syndromes - biological
inflammatory syndrome - cognitive status change (the modification of the tests of the geriatrics
scales). The assessments were conducted at 6 months and 1 year after inclusion, compared with 200
patients with no metabolic syndrome, demonstrating an increased risk of cognitive decline, the
association, also, with the age of the patients.
Results and discussion. Incidence of cognitive decline in patients with metabolic syndrome
averaged 25.7% higher than the control group. Moreover, the presence of biological inflammatory
syndrome associated with metabolic syndrome significantly increases the risk of cognitive decline to
61.4% at 2 years.
Conclusions. The results are consistent with current studies, but also with older observations,
which revealed that the presence of metabolic risk factors in the population over 70 years
substantially increases the risk of Alzheimer's disease. Also, the association of inflammatory
syndrome allows cognitive risk stratification in subjects with metabolic syndrome.
