Software Definitions

This section provides some basic definitions that the software uses.

 Hairpin
Example is shown below

So 0.5 hairpin would be half the section above

 Effective Length
Is the distance in each leg over which heat transfer occurs excluding inner pipe

 Series Arrangement
Example shown below

 Series - Parallel Arrangement

Example shown below

16
 Thermal Capacity Ratio
The thermal capacity of a stream is can be defined as the product of the mass flow rate and the
average specific heat capacity so in a two-stream heat exchanger one thermal capacity will be
greater than the other. The thermal capacity ratio is defined as the ratio of the smaller thermal
capacity to the larger

17
Data Screens

Data1 Screen

 Enter Hot side component.

 Enter the Flow rate or check the "Calculate" button to calculate the flow rate - providing that
you have entered both inlet and outlet temperatures.
 Enter Inlet/Outlet Temperatures - You can choose to calculate a temperature providing that
you have the other temperature and you also enter the flow rate
 It is a must to enter all physical properties - you may ignore the Specific Enthalpy.
 The Specific Enthalpy is only required for Steam if you are using Steam on any side.
 You must enter Prandtl Number or check to calculate it.
 The Calculation of Prandtl Number will be instant
 Now click on the Arrow or click on the Tab that's labelled "Data2" to move on.

To avoid errors avoid entering signs such as "*" multiplication or "E" letter inside any of the
entry boxes, keep contestant decimal point separator input, Use the dscimal point separator that
is assigned by your Windows operating system, to change this settings please refer to Microsoft
windows help..
All calculations performed and screen captured are for demonstration purpose only

18
Data2 Screen

1.
2. The Cold side has the same process as above.
All calculations performed and screen captured are for demonstration purpose only

19
Data3 Screen

The pipe specification screen:

 At this screen you will need to either choose the first option and provide your pipe details on
the next screen.
The details requested will be (OD1,OD2,ID1,ID2).

 If you chose the second option the software will load it's standard IPS (Iron Pipe Size)
specifications where you will be able to select the required specification.
 You can always reload the IPS database by selecting “Use my spec.” then clicking on “Use
Software IPS spec.”

All calculations performed and screen captured are for demonstration purpose only

20
Data4 Screen

 If IPS option was selected in Data3 Screen the software will load it's standard database and
manual entries option will be inactive.
 For this example the Inner and Outer pipe sizes are selected as above.
 Calculate button must be clicked - The estimate provided for the flow area will be without
fins. Even if you intend to use fins you still need to click the "Calculate" button - Estimation
for flow area with fins will be calculated later.
 For Manual entries - the important entries that you need to provide are ID1,ID2,OD1,OD2 - if
you don't enter the Pipe Schedule the software will ignore it as it's not required for
calculations.

All calculations performed and screen captured are for demonstration purpose only

21
Data5 Screen

 The software will provide you with common effective length values - The Effective length
can be changed by checking the "Change Value" check box - The Effective length is
described under the Definitions section.
 You must then decide the arrangement.
 Series - Parallel arrangement can always be used depending on the conditions of the problem
provided. For example you could split the hot side to 2 or 3 streams if you have high pressure
drop. However care should always be exercised in making the decisions of splitting the flow.
 Calculation preferences screen is where extra calculation options can be set. If fins are used
then use fins check box must be checked
 Specifying component locations is also available but it's recommended to exercise care when
using this function, only use this function if you are very certain about your design. The
function is only there for convenience.
 It's more common to use Counter current flow for such type of heat exchangers. However the
Co-current option is available. The software will use your option to calculate the Log Mean
Temperature Difference.
 Pipe type - the software also has three options;
1. Tube option - is more for smooth tubes
2. Commercial Pipe option - is for clean commercial Iron and Steel pipes
3. Other option - choose this if you have another pipe type you will be asked to enter the
Friction Factor at a later stage during the calculation, please make sure that you only enter the
number in decimal places and don't enter signs such as "*" multiplication sign or letter "E" as
this will cause errors.
 If the fins check box is checked then the following screen will appear
All calculations performed and screen captured are for demonstration purpose only

22
Fins Specification Screen

1. You must fill all the required information - not doing so will generate calculation errors
2. When done click on "Results" button to continue

All calculations performed and screen captured are for demonstration purpose only

23
Errors

 This error screen would appear if you don't enter or you forget to enter a variable, errors
would execute on the click of the results button.

 If you notice any negative values or errors please check the data screens for any numerical
error or wrong value.
 When fins are used the calculations of flow area is adjusted for fins but if no fins are used the
software will use the values originally calculated in Data4 Screen

All calculations performed and screen captured are for demonstration purpose only

26
Results3 Screen

Annulus (Outer pipe) Correlations screen

All Correlations have been taken from literature sources listed in the Acknowledgements section
 A correlation must be selected to calculate Nusselt Number - If you do have a valid
correlation you can use it and calculate Nesselt number then type in the result you have in the
text box provided. Click the adjust button to make sure that the label reads the same value
you entered before you continue to Results4 screen.
 The light bulb at the right hand side of the screen will show the symbols meaning.

All calculations performed and screen captured are for demonstration purpose only
Re = Reynolds No.
Pr = Prandtle No.
u = Viscosity
u wall = Viscosity at tube wall

k = Thermal Conductivity
L = Total Length
Jh = Heat transfer factor

27
Results4 Screen

Pipe (Inner pipe) Correlations screen

All Correlations have been taken from literature sources listed in the Acknowledgements section
 A correlation must be selected to calculate Nusselt Number - If you do have a valid
correlation you can use it and calculate Nesselt number then type in the result you have in the
text box provided. Click the adjust button to make sure that the label reads the same value
you entered before you continue to Results5 screen
All calculations performed and screen captured are for demonstration purpose only

28
Results5 Screen

 Clicking the "4: Calculate" button will generate all results below
 The software have two different "Results5" screens the on below is shown for finned tube
heat exchanger. (The results below are not a representation of the example above!)
 You may find the need to adjust the design, to do so you will need to enter the length in the
text box provided and click on the "Adjust" button to see the results of this action. The action
will also adjust all other variables involved in the calculations and this will impact the
Number of Hairpin Units, the Area ....etc. As an example, you may get the "Number of
Hairpin Units" calculated as 1.3 Units - this in practice is not possible! so you will need to
round this figure to the nearest unit this would be 1.5 Units, to achieve this you will need to
increase the "Length", so by trial and error you will need to keep increasing the Length until
you get the 1.5 figure.

(Fins Option)

 Adding fins does have an impact on the Overall Heat Transfer Coefficient also you will find
that it reduces the Number of Hairpin Units, Length and Area
 The software will add an extra calculated variable (Fin Efficiency) for the fins option
calculations

29
(Without Fins)

All calculations performed and screen captured are for demonstration purpose only

30
Results6 Screen

 If the Fins option is selected then the "Results6" Screen would look as below (The results
below are not a representation of the example above).

(Fins Option)

 Before Clicking on the Calculate button please make sure that the Friction Factor text box is
completed. The friction factor entry will only apply to the Fins Option but if your exchanger
is without fins then you won't need to enter any friction factor in this screen.
 There is a standard graph provided with the calculation to use for finding this friction factor.

31
 To Maximise the screen for the above chart point your cursor to the top right corner
and click the square button.

If the non-fins option is used the screen would look as below

All calculations performed and screen captured are for demonstration purpose only

32

Troubleshooting Errors

Errors that may occur and how to handle them

Division by zero
This error may occur under different conditions in the results screens, if this error occur while
thermal calculations are performed then check the figures you entered in to the data entry screens.
It's more likely that you forgot to enter a figure or you entered an incorrect figure format. Or your
figures are too small for the software to accept.
Make sure that all your textboxes are filled correctly and you are clicking all buttons in order.

This error may also occur at the correlations screen after you click the calculate button. This
could be because you didn't check to ignore the viscosity at wall term check box.

47
