1. What made the chief astrologer place his finger on his nose? (1-1-1)

The chief astrologer placed his finger on his nose as he was analyzing the life of the
young prince. He predicted that since the prince has been born during the hour of the
bull therefore, the bull and the tiger can be his enemies causing harm to him.

2. What great miracle did the ten day old Jilani Jung Jung Bahadur perform? How did it
affect the people who listened to him? (1-1-2)

When Prince Jung Bahadur was born it was professed that he will die one day and that a
tiger will be the reason of his death. The prince was only ten days old at that time but
surprisingly he conversed and said that death is common to all. He also announced that
the tigers should be aware of him instead. This line was said at that particular instant.

3. How did the Tiger King manage to kill the hundredth tiger? (1-1-3)

The hundredth tiger was a wooden toy tiger which the king had presented to his three-
year old son. It killed the king merely by a sliver of wood protruding form it that pierced
his right hand. The wound developed pus and it soon spread all over the arm.

4. Describe the efforts made by the Tiger king to achieve his target of killing a hundred
tigers. (1-2-1,2, 3, 6 marks)

The Tiger King made numerous efforts to fulfil his target of killing a hundred tigers. He
stayed in the forest for many days. He fired many of his officers for not getting
him tigers. He had to spend a ransom of three lakh rupees to impress the British official
and discourage him from killing the tigers.
5. The Tiger kind wanted to protect himself from a tiger attack. Describe the difficulties
created by him for his officials and subjects. (1-3-1, 2, 3, 6 marks)

The Tiger king wanted to protect himself from a tiger attack. The king of
Pratibandapuram disapproves the astrologer’s prophecy and challenges him to kill
hundred tigers. His servants were living in fear of losing their jobs so they quietly
supported their master in his pursuits. They obedience was out of fear and not sincerity.
He had hunted around 70 tigers after which there were no more left in his estate. So he
called for the dewan and state astrologer and asked them to look for a suitable bride.
His requirement was a kingdom having maximum number of tigers so that he could go
ahead with hunting 100 tigers. Even after getting married to such a bride he was unable
to find the 100th tiger. He even threatened the dewan to resign if he couldn’t find the
100thtiger for him. They arranged for a tiger from the people’s park so that the King
could fulfil his wish. But the tiger wasn’t originally hunted by him. This fact was
concealed by the dewan because he feared losing his position. The Tiger King was very
happy to prove the astrologer’s prophecy to be wrong. It was his son’s birthday and he
went to buy a toy for him. He selected a wooden tiger and the shopkeeper quoted a
huge amount for it proving it to be one of the finest pieces in his shop. Though the
original price wasn’t too high, he did so because he was afraid of being punished under
the rules of emergency. Eventually, the Tiger King met his end at the hands of this
wooden tiger whose silver unfinished edge pierced his hand and the infection spread
across the arm.

6. Who actually killed the hundredth tiger in 'The Tiger king"? Why? (1-4-1)

The Tiger King could not kill the hundredth tiger. It had merely fainted from shock of the
sound of the bullet. It is the wooden tiger from the toyshop that becomes the cause of
Maharaja’s death. One of the slivers on its body pierces the Maharaja's right hand.

7. Why did no one in Pratibandapuram experience any sorrow and anguish at the death
of the Tiger King? (1-4-2, 6 marks)

No one in Pratibandpuram cry or felt sad at the death of the Tiger King because he was
not a popular king at all. On the contrary he had been a selfish, irresponsible, self-
centered, and troublesome for his people. He did many things to displease and annoy
his subjects.

8. How did the Tiger King’s marriage bring him closer to his target? (1-4-3)

The Maharaja murdered seventy tigers in ten years and due to which no tiger can be
found in Pratibandapuram. In the series to achieve his target of killing 100, the Maharaja
determined to marry a lady from a royal estate which had more tigers to
achieve his objective.
9. Why did the Maharaja decide to double the land tax in a hillside village? (1-5-1)

The Maharaja doubled the land tax in exasperation and rage after he failed to hunt the
hundredth tiger near the village he had put up his tent. The Maharaja was exceedingly
worried to complete his tally of killing hundred tigers. He had already killed ninety-nine
tigers.

Maharaja decided to marry a royal girl because she had tigers in her estate. Till that
time, he had killed seventy tigers and needed thirty more to be killed. In order to
achieve his target, he decided to get married. In order to defeat the astrologer's
prophecy, the Maharaja had to kill a hundred tigers.

The Dewan had brought a tiger from the People’s Park in Madras and kept it hidden in
his house. When the Maharaja threatened him with dire consequences, he understood
that the only way to save himself was to ‘plant’ a tiger for the kill. So, he and his aged
wife dragged the tiger to the forest where the king was hunting. The king took aim and
the beast soon collapsed.

1. What considerations influenced the Tiger King to get married?(1-1, 2, 3)

The Maharaja had taken an oath to kill 100 tigers and he already killed all the tigers of
Pratibandapuram but he was lacking by 30 tigers to reach the number 100. So, the king
decided to marry a girl of an estate which has ample of tigers and thus, he decided to
marry.

solve it? (1-2)

When the Maharaja killed seventy tigers, he fell short of the tigers. There was no tiger
left in his kingdom. In order to come up from this problem, the King married the
princess of the kingdom in which there were many tigers. Whenever he would visit his
father-in-law's house he would kill five to six tigers in order to complete the killing of the
hundred tigers.

2. How did the Maharaja deal with a high ranking British officer who wanted to shoot a
tiger? (1-2)

A high-ranking British officer, who was actually a coward, wanted to kill a tiger to flaunt
himself before his compatriots. When he was not allowed to hunt a tiger he sent a word
to the King that he would be happy if he was just allowed to be photographed with a
dead tiger killed by the King.

3. Why did the Maharaja have to pay a bill of three lakh rupees to the British jewellers?

When the Maharaja refused a British officer to conduct a tiger hunt, he risked losing his
kingdom. So he sent fifty diamond rings to his wife costing three lakh Rupees to his wife
to select one.

The dewan brought the hundredth tiger from People's park in Madras and kept it
hidden in his house. At night, the dewan and his wife took the tiger in their car to
the forest where the Maharaja was hunting. The old tiger wandered into the Maharaja's
presence and was shot.

The Tiger King could not kill the hundredth tiger. It had merely fainted from shock of the

suppurating sore all over the arm. The king was operated and the
operation was successful but the doctors declared, “The Maharaja is dead.” Thus
the hundredth tiger of wood took its revenge upon the Tiger King.

suggested that his death would come by a tiger. Thus, he made the prophecy that the

tigers beware". This was ironical for a baby to utter such words.

When the astrologers predicted that one day the future Tiger King would die, he
remarked that it was nothing special about it as everyone who is born has to die one
day. When he was told that a tiger would be the cause of his death, he growled and
bewared all the tigers.

3. What kind of life was enjoyed by crown prince Jung Bahadur till he reached the age of

Crown prince Jung Jung Bahadur led a glamorous and grand life. He grew taller and
stronger day by day. The boy drank the milk of an English cow. He was brought up by an
English governess. He was tutored in English by an Englishman. He saw nothing but
English films. When he became twenty years old, the rule of the state came into his
hands.
