The House of the Spirits should be removed

from AKAM classrooms

GOAL: Your goal is to prepare an argument

for or against the proposal to have The House
of the Spirits banned.
ROLE: You will adopt a persona. You could
be a parent, teacher, student or any stakeholder
of Aga Khan Academy Mombasa.
AUDIENCE: Your target audience is the Aga
Khan Academy school community.
SITUATION: The situation is that a parent
has written to the school board claiming that
The House of the Spirits is inappropriate and
should be banned. The board has called for a
meeting (baraza) where the school community
will share their views.
PRODUCT: You will research the issue to
obtain facts to support or counteract the
proposal in the letter. Prepare argument in a
detailed T chart.
STANDARDS: Your notes must cite at least
four secondary sources. For each point, there
must be a supporting detail from the novel. In
your presentation, you will need to convince
the baraza why they should “vote” a certain
way.

throwing at other debaters.
