GPO: Take Action
Neighborhood Council Meeting
EVIDENCE:
Steve Bae, the president of the neighborhood council for Koreatown, started the meeting by calling order
and taking roll call of the board members. Along Steve Bae, was Muhammed Islam, the vicepresident,
they both gave the public time to speak about any concerns to start the meeting. Ramon took the
opportunity this time to talk about the accident where a 4 year old died while her mother was severely
injured by a car in Normandie/Olympic. He demanded safer roads for children and pedestrians around
that area, as well as speed humps to prevent speeding. I do agree with Ramon because people don’t follow
the rules around this area and this is one example of how speeding can take away a child's life. An LAPD
officer told the public he didn’t have any jurisdiction over the case, so he knew very little about it, but
suggested that it could have possibly been the pedestrians fault. I was personally outraged by this
comment because he made it seem like it was the mother’s fault that her daughter was killed. Afterwards,
Deputy George from district 13th came to speak about their efforts to repair the city’s sidewalks. Other
people gave other comments about events that were happening during the weekend. Some of the events
for kids are skating rinks since Los Angeles does not have any snow. One last event discussed was a
non-profit organization event on Saturday that gives toys to low income kids. I like the idea of LAPD
creating a better community environment for adults and kids. The last thing I remembered from the
meeting was the president, Steve Bae, calling for every committee to tell their updates. One of the updates
for the Budget and Finance committee was from the board member, Adriane Hoff, who spoke about
soliciting a request for speed humps in Oxford avenue. She told the public that she got a weird response
from the City saying that they would consider it, but other spots already had requested and were more
worth listening to. Overall, attending this meeting really made me reconsider what I think about the
neighborhood council; at the beginning I thought it was going to be a boring meeting, but I actually liked
listening to the things the public and the board members had to say. I would go back to a meeting once
again to stay updated about any events or things that happen within Koreatown.
