Somalia’s Geography

❖ It is bordered by Ethiopia to the west,


Djibouti to the northwest, the Gulf of
Aden to the north, the Indian Ocean
and Guardafui channel to the east.
❖ The total area of Somalia is
637, 657 SQ. KM
Somalia’s demographic

❖ Somalia’s population is 14.317 million


❖ Population density of Somalia is 23.5 per sq. km
❖ Somalis are the largest ethnic group in SOmalia,
making up to 85% of the population.
❖ Other ethnic groups that make up Somalia’s
population are Bantus, Bajunis, Eyle, Ethiopians,
Indians, Pakistanis, Persians, Arabs, Italians
and Britons.
Somalia’s foundation

❖ Before Somalia ever existed, it was a colonial


territory to Italian and British. The French
territory became the republic of Djibouti.
❖ After WW2, Somalia was trying to get its
independence, but failed to do so.
❖ 1950, Somalia was a u.n. trust territory for 10
years under the U.N. Italian administration.
❖ 1960, Somalia was finally a Republic.

❖ Somalia has one of the world’s lowest gross
enrolment rates for primary school‐aged
children with only 30% children at primary
education level and 26% for secondary
education level.
❖ Somalia has a 54% unemployment rate, which
makes the economy go down, as it is estimated
in the international debt of at least 93% in
GDP.
Interesting facts about Somalia...

❖ The country is the first African nation that


was used for flying warplanes by the British
militia
❖ The Civil War in Somalia has been going
on for over a decade. The war has been
going on primarily against Ethiopia,
though U.S. troops have been killed as well
when intervening.
Global issue general

❖ Asia is the continent with the highest rate of


hunger - two thirds of the total.
❖ Poverty is the main cause of hunger in the world.
Other reasons may vary depending on the climate,
natural disasters or food shortage.
❖ 11.3% of the population is hungry. Which means
that up to 805 Million people are facing it.
Global issue specifically in somalia

❖ Somalia is currently facing a severe


drought and armed conflict, causing
hunger to strive.
❖ Currently there are about 365,000
children in Somalia facing famine
❖ 50% of the population is in need of
humanitarian assistance.
❖ In 2011, 250,000 people died due to a
devastating famine that hit Somalia
Proposal & solution
❖ Make new jobs, which will make the
unemployment rate decreased and
will help the Somali economy, as well
as citizens.
❖ Make a balance government to meet
people's needs.
❖ Food donations from countries that
waste tons of food per year, such as
the U.S. and European countries.
Other possible solutions

❖ Access to education will make youth


Somalis to see a brighter future.
❖ Empowering women to make the
inequality face in the country come to
an end.
❖ Birth control education to prevent
child famine.
❖ Implement new ways to make sweet
water available to crops and people.
