In addition, DEC has best practice recommendations in technology as well as in interdisciplinary

models of service delivery. Technology, as it relates to children with special needs, is often
referred to as assistive technology, which is defined as any item that supports or helps children
with special needs gain greater independence. For example, assistive technology may include
items that enable a child to perform tasks that she was not able to do previously, such as painting
with an adaptive paintbrush or putting together a puzzle with an adaptive knob or handle. In some
cases, the technology is more sophisticated and may include devices, such as an adaptive switch
or keyboard, that allow the child to use the computer or turn on a battery- operated toy.
