ABSTRACT

Endang Suryanti. Antidiabetic Potential of Hyptis capitata Jacq. from Several Different Regions.
Supervised by Irawan Wijaya Kusuma and Enos Tangke Arung.

Indonesia's forests is reported to have 30.000 species of medicinal plants, of which 940
species have been declared to have medicinal properties. Hyptis capitata is a type of shrub from
the family Lamiaceae which is an invasive species or can be called a weed because of its rapid
spread. H. capitata has been reported to have antioxidant activity because its ability to inhibit free
radicals. Various plants having high antioxidant activity are reported to have antidiabetic activity.
There is no traditional use or scientific publication regarding the use of H. capitata for antidiabetic.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the antioxidant potential, antidiabetic potential, total
phenol content and total flavonoid content of H. capitata extracts from several regions. The
analysis of secondary metabolites was carried out by the antioxidant test method with TLC
bioautography, the total phenolic content by the Folin-Ciocalteu method, the total flavonoid
content by the colorimetric AlCl3 method, the analysis of antidiabetic potential was carried out by
testing the inhibitory activity of the α-glucosidase enzyme. The methanol extract of H. capitata at
the root of the Tarakan region had the highest total phenol content of 127,654 μg GAE/mg extract.
The methanol extract of H. capitata stem part of the Tarakan region had the highest total flavonoid
content which was 132,161 μg CE/mg extract. The results of testing the α-glucosidase inhibition
activity in the methanol extract of H. capitata from the Tarakan, Kutai Kartanegara, Samarinda,
and Sukabumi regions showed that the H. capitata sample did not have the ability to inhibit α-
glucosidase enzyme. Based on these results, H. capitata has potential to be developed for herbal
products if the safety issue can be confirmed.
