The introduction in thesis writing will play the crucial part of narrowing the main subject

matter of the thesis to easily be appreciated by the reader. Other advisers will recommend writing

the introduction in thesis after you made your review of related literature and methodology

because most of the contents of the introduction will come from those parts. Your readers will be

directed towards the nature of the thesis by reading the introduction for it will serve as the basis

of your work. It should be noted that the introduction will be the starting point on whether or not

your thesis will hold the interest of your readers. But, are there ways on how to make an

introduction in thesis writing interesting to the reader?

What should be included in the introduction?

The main content of the introduction in thesis writing should include: The background of

the study, the nature and scope of the problem, methods used, the objectives, and a thesis

statement. The introduction therefore must orient the reader, identifies objectives and methods,

and state the general claim.

How to write introduction in thesis?

The following steps in writing thesis introduction will serve as a guideline in making a

good introduction in your thesis.

First, start with the background of your study. Writing the background will depend on the

topic. It may be descriptive in nature or may be a continuation of a previous thesis. Assuming

you already narrowed down your desired topic, gather much information about the topic as you

possibly can by referring to relevant related literature for your thesis. You may use an outline to

establish the uniformity of your ideas.

Next, write the nature and scope of the problem. Your readers will expect to read in the

introduction some specific question that you are trying to solve. In this part, you should describe

to your readers the fundamental challenges and interpret it in a way take will strike a concern to

your reader.

Then, write about your methods. After you present the problems, it is expected that you

must have specific methodology on how to address these problems. Describe the general idea of

the steps that you will apply throughout your thesis. Take note that you should not write the full

contents of your methodology or list all its different approaches. You should only illustrate your

research design that is appropriate in answering the presented scope of the problem. In that way,

your introduction will tell your readers that you understand the nature of the problem and you

can address it accordingly.

Afterwards, present your objectives. Placing the objectives in the introduction provides

the supplementary context that will tell your readers that your thesis is bound to succeed. Well-

presented objectives usually follow the familiar guideline S.M.A.R.T. meaning specific,

measurable, attainable, realistic, and time-bound.

Lastly, add your thesis statement. The thesis statement is a statement usually composed

of one or two sentences that instigate your main claim about your thesis. The thesis statement

serves as the conclusion part of your introduction. A good sample introduction in thesis writing

usually employs a good thesis statement that complements the topic and context of your paper. A

thesis statement usually has three parts: the subject, the context and the claim. The subject is the

topic being discussed. The context is the situation or the setting of the subject or study. The

claim is the main argument or stand of the thesis statement.
