Q5) Since many people are not consciously aware of ethical practices, how do you effectively
communicate the necessity of ethical norms in your company?
In Engro it is made sure that each employee does not only read and understand company’s code of ethics
but also practice them during their job. At the time of hiring, certain very important ethical practices,
which serve as the basis of company’s business, are communicated to the person so that he understands
culture of the company. Then during his/her training period, which is generally one year long, he/she gets
a chance to meet almost all of the heads of the departments that share their experiences and several
examples from past where ethical issues were dealt very effectively. Employee is also given a manual that
contains company’s code of conducts and it is made compulsory for everyone to read and understand
them. Further, every year sessions are conducted on code of ethics which is compulsory for every
employee to attend. There is no exemption for anyone from these annual sessions. Every department has
its own WhatsApp group where almost every week some ethical codes or incidents related to ethical
conduct are shared so that these codes become part of every employee life.
Q6) How do you decide what is ethical or not (e.g. is it based on your own personal judgment, law,
religion, local culture or norms?
In order to decide what is ethical and what is not, company uses three sources as a frame of reference.
Firstly, they use company internal policy and procedures to gauge a certain act on ethical grounds. The
code of conduct formulated by the organization provides the necessary guidelines for taking decisions
based on ethics. Secondly, if relevant guidelines are not enough through company resources then external
resources are used as a reference. Code of ethics of other organizations including nationals and
multinationals are sought after in order to make a decision. Lastly, if both internal and external
environment are not enough then company uses the generally accepted best practices for deciding whether
an act is ethical or not.
