Britannia started in 1892 as a small biscuit company in Calcutta (now Kolkata) as time moves
on, the biscuit market continued to grow and Britannia grew along with it. In 1975, the
Britannia biscuit company took over the distribution of biscuit from parry’s who till now
distributed Britannia biscuits in India. The company celebrated its platinum jubilee in 1997
and reviled its corporate identity “EAT HEALTHY, THINK BETTER” in 21st century
Britannia is one of the India’s biggest brand and pre-eminent food brand of the country.
It has an estimated 38% market share. The company’s principal activity involves
manufacturing and sale of biscuits, bread, Rusk, cakes and dairy products. Talking on the part
of growth and profitability, The Company is growing at a steady rate, and is currently
profitable. Between 1998 and 2001, the company's sales grew at a compound annual rate of
16% against the market, and operating profits reached 18%. More recently, the company has
been growing at 27% a year, compared to the industry's growth rate of 20%.At present, 90%
of Britannia’s annual revenue of Rs2,200 crore comes from biscuits.

Thus, the new logo was born, encapsulating the core essence of Britannia - healthy,
nutritious, and optimistic - and combining it with a delightful product range to offer variety
and choice to consumers.

Competition
Britannia’s strength is it’s range. Unlike Parle/ Sun feast Britannia is not dependent on just 4
or 5 brands.
While Britannia might not be strong in the Glucose category simply because they entered in
1996, Parle has been there for decades. Britannia has many innovative products where there
is no competition like cakes and brands like Nutrichoice, Treat etc
Such brands where there is no competition are less elastic.
They are the only national player in Cakes and Rusk. Though there are many small
unorganized players/ local bakers etc. But nationally no one comes close. These products also
happen to be their most profitable brands simply because we know we can price them at
higher prices because there is no substitute & hence we improve our overall companies
profitability by selling more of these brands.
History
1892- Britannia started its business with an investment of Rs 275 in Kolkata

Roles, Responsibilities and Ethics


Being the 2nd biggest brand of biscuits, Britannia has stretched its origin all over the world.
Today Britannia is such renowned company because of its employees and people who serve
the company with all their hard work and dedication. Britannia working environment is very
diversified and people there know what is brand loyalty. They can’t bear a Parle or sun feast
packet at their friends place also.
Why I choose this company? Basically Mr Nishchay Bahl , Area Sales Manager , Jaipur ,
Rajasthan. Is the primary source of information. He gave us an idea that what are the
responsibilities of Britannia
Britannia is a company where work behavior, ethics and environment is maintained in such a
manner that it focus on getting high productivity and optimum resource utilization.

Code of conduct of the company talks about everything related to people working there.
It states all the laws, policies and principles that govern the activities of the company. The
company has documented the CODE OF BUSINESS CONDUCT for its employees, it’s a
handbook which states everything in detail
So to be very brief,
 Responsibilities of employees :-
o Maintaining ethical standards , including appropriate accounting controls
o Identify , surface and resolve ethical issues with great speed
o Corporate assets (physical and intellectual) must not be used for personal
benefits
o Exercise good judgement and standards of good taste when creating company
records , including e-mail

ENTRY LEVEL RECRUITMENT


So the main source of recruitment for entry level is through

 Business schools (MBA)


 Graduates from top universities (Delhi university)
 Engineering institutes
 Food technology institutes
 ICAI/ICWAI/ICSI/ICFAI and other institutes offering professional courses.
So the campus recruitment at Britannia has two stages

 SUMMER TRAINEE :- it takes place for a period of two months where students from
business schools and functional institutes work on projects in following functional
areas
Marketing, sales and distribution, operational and supply chain, human resource
management, finance, quality assurance. At the end of internship the employee work
is evaluated and if considered the company hires the same. The project is presented
during the final placements and this project could help the company to judge
employee’s efficiency.
 MANAGEMENT TRAINING: - management trainees are recruited on the basis of
vacancies in the company. They are hired through their pre-placements offers or
through campus recruitment
After the entry in the company there is 18 months training for technical managers and 12
months training for other trainees.

LATERAL RECRUITMENT
it basically mean we are recruiting a person who has almost the same kind of designation /
role / responsibilities (at the present company) as that you are offering him without any
additional or only notional increase in his salary.
Eligibility:-2 years or more years experience. Recruitment is done according to vacancies
available at every functional area of the company.
Recruitment process at Britannia
 Application :- the 1st and foremost is to fill the application form which can be done
through
1. Online – there is an official website to fill up the application form.
2. Through consultant – the job if available can be offered by consultants
3. Direct – we can apply directly by visiting the company
4. Employee referrals – employee referrals means that employees those are
already serving the company can give reference to the company about their
friends and relatives
5. There are examination ( Britannia papers ) which is also a form to apply
 Short listing :- basically candidates are shortlisted on following aspects
1. Vacancies in the company
2. Quality minimum educational background
3. Experienced or not
4. Any professional degree or not
5. And so on.
So in Britannia all the aspects are taken into consideration and short listing is done of
applied candidate’s takes place. Short listing also include the process of providing
information to the candidates those are selected for the vacancies
 Interview: - interview is the most essential part of the selection process it consists
multiple rounds that includes group discussion and personal interview. Group
discussion is for 8-9 minutes and candidates are judged accordingly after that there is
an interview round of selected candidates. There are two panellists in the board room
who decide and whether the candidate is good enough to a britannian. The panellist
ask the many question from the CV and come to a final decision whether to recruit the
candidate or not.

 Final offer: - final offer means sending the final offer letter to the candidate which
means the candidate is selected and is employed. In Britannia the letter states
following points :-
o date of joining,
o salary package and
o The hand book of Britannia.

 Pre employment medical examination: - employment pre medical examination checks


the background of the workers to reduce the future risk . Britannia follows advanced
research systems.
 Appointment: - after the whole process of recruitment the candidate is finally
appointed his designation and other employees welcome him/her with full motivation
and gratitude

So BIL follows the above process to welcome new people to their organisation.
Conclusion
Hiring the best of all, Britannia is a company which believes in over all development
of the employee and taking into consideration the needs and desires of the candidate.
