This is a first draft, there is obviously more I could say but wanted to keep it

short. Feel free to use verbatim, make changes or suggest to me. Maybe a few
links examples of good practice or evidence of insect decline? If you are
writing about mowing in general rather than about a specific area (I think you
may have more luck if you do suggest an area) the latter half of the letter could
still be useful.
I am writing to you as a concerned (constituent/tenant/resident) The matter
concerns the area of grass/verge located at (…….) The area is currently cut
regularly. I am asking if the mowing regime can be changed in order to be of
more benefit to wildlife, particularly pollinating insects. I would love to see
the area cut no earlier than August, ideally later. A thin border of more
regularly cut grass could be maintained to create a neater look. The area is
not used for games, sitting or walking, longer grass would not block any sight
lines.
I know there are some people who like to see grass clipped short everywhere,
but they are a declining minority, many more people love to see longer grass
with flowers and insects.
Beyond the fact I think it looks good, I would like to provide some context for
my request. The UK parliament declared an environmental emergency on 1st
of May 2019. This was in recognition of growing evidence, that we are
currently in the midst of a mass extinction event driven by mans’ impact on the
environment. Of particular relevance to my request is a study from Germany
in 2016. They had been surveying flying insects across Germany for 25 years,
over that period a decline of 75% across all flying insects was observed. That
is an alarming statistic and one that threatens our ability to support ourselves
on this planet. One of the major reason for this decline is a loss of habitat.
Flowers and longer grass allow our insects the conditions they need to
complete their life cycles, short mown grass does not. You may wonder what
difference your small areas of grass can make, but this an effort we must all
make together, as our own parliament declared, this is an emergency.
Some of the changes we need to make to avoid environmental disaster are
really hard, leaving the grass to grow a bit longer is surely one of the easier
ones?

I look forward to your response.
