INTRODUCTION

First of all, what is gun control? Gun control or “firearms regulation” is the set of
laws or policies that regulate the manufactures, sale, transfer, possession,
modification or use of firearms by civilians. Jurisdictions that regulate access to
firearms typically restricts access to only certain categories of firearms and then to
restrict categories of persons who will be granted a license to have access to a
firearm. For gun policies, relevant outcomes can include, among others the health of
gun industry, individual’s ability to defend themselves, and homicides and suicide
rates. In other words, policymakers need to understand the costs and benefits that
different policies are likely to produce for society as a whole, including gun owners,
communities wracked by violence and other affected groups.

There are also two types of people considering gun control. The “Pro-Gun
Control” and the “Anti-Gun Control”. Pro-gun control people say that “more guns –
more violence” and “stop the wrong people from getting guns”. While on
contradictory, Anti-gun control says and suggest that “Gun control is not the answer
– education is” and “mass media is to blame: murder is an easy route to fame”. Here
in the Philippines, we only implement gun ban during election periods. We actually
have laws about gun control and owning firearms. That’s actually where we run into
problems. We have laws that should be followed, people don’t follow it anyway and
we are not equipped to truly go after tem and enforce the laws.

All in all, this research shows the effects of gun control in the Philippines. Yet like
what is written, even though there are laws and policies about it, people still don’t
follow it. Now, the problem is not in the government but in the people. They don’t
have disciplines and respect to the law. They do want they want to and most of the
time, not caring or thinking about the possible outcome or results and who are going
to be affected by their act. To solve dilemma about having poor gun control in the
Philippines, it should start with the people living here. To have discipline, respect to
others and follow the law.
