Student Help Hours: Tuesday and Thursday 9:30 am to 12:00 pm on the Lemoore Campus. I
am also available to help students by appointment or during lab sections.

Course Website: This is a web enhanced course with access to online materials available on the
West Hills College website using Canvas.

Prerequisites: Math 63 or 64 or equivalent.

Course Description: Chemistry 2A is a study of the applied principles of chemistry for the
allied science and non-science majors. Included are scientific methodology, composition of
matter, physical and chemical changes, bonding, nomenclature, chemical periodicity and
reactivity, stoichiometry, states of matter, atomic and molecular modeling, chemical energetics,
properties and models of solids, liquids, gases, aqueous solution and redox reactions, pH,
reactions of elements/acids/bases/salts, and a brief introduction to organic chemistry.
Appropriate training in chemical safety is provided. (AA, CSU, UC) The Chemistry 2A, 2B
sequence is a state university curriculum requirement for students planning to transfer to majors
in agriculture, nursing, home economics, industrial technology, industrial technology, industrial
arts and other applied sciences.

Chemistry 2A Grading: Points are earned from lab assignments and exams. Points for each
component and range of percentages are listed below.

Chemistry 2A Grade Formula: % = 0.35(average labs) + 0.45(average exams) + 0.20(final)

Chemistry 2A Lecture Attendance: Attendance in lecture is not mandatory (although strongly


recommended) and does not affect an individual course grade. However, failure to attend class
may result in administrative drop in the class at the discretion of the instructor (see Drop
Policy). Attendance to lecture on exam days is mandatory.

Chemistry 2A Lab Attendance: This course includes a lab component. Enrollment and
completion of a lab is required to complete this course. It is important to be in lab on time. A
missed lab will result in a zero score for that lab if not made up in a timely manner.

Chemistry 2A Lab Assignments: All lab assignments will be given a due date one week after
the assigned day unless otherwise specified. Some assignments will require work outside of lab
(homework).

Chemistry 2A Exams: Exams will be scheduled according to the syllabus, however, exact
exam dates are be subject to change.

90%-100% A

80% - 89% B

70% - 79% C

60% - 69% D

Below 60% F

Academic Accommodation: If you need academic accommodation or materials in alternate


media (i.e.: Braille, large print, electronic text, etc.) per the Americans with Disabilities Act or
Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act, please advise your instructor.

Cell Phone Policy: any cell phone usage during exams will result in the early termination of that
exam for that student. No make-up will be given.

Drop Policy: Failure to attend the first day of class will result in the student being dropped from
the class. A student not attending class for three consecutive scheduled class days will result in a
drop from the course prior to the drop deadline.

Academic Honesty: This course abides by the Academic Honesty Policy set forth by Board
Policy 5505. This policy states student’s will complete all academic work without plagiarism,
cheating, lying, tampering, stealing, or receiving unauthorized or illegitimate assistance from any

Photocopy Policy: All students will be given an account with 200 copies for use as they wish,
which they can access when they login at any district location. Any additional copies beyond
that amount will need to be purchased by the student at a cost of $0.10 for black and white and $
0.25 for color prints. Credits for these additional copies may be purchased from the student
services center.

Course Objectives

A. Apply analytical evaluations to the chemical nature of matter.


B. Complete stoichiometric chemical computations which apply dimensional analysis and
conversion factors.
C. Develop critical problem solution styles with a logical, sequential tracking format
appropriate for easy calculator reduction.
D. Develop system modeling skills for a wide array of chemical parameters using common
principles.
E. Apply chemistry as a central science to all the other sciences in that it explains all systems
that have an atomic/molecular basis.
F. View chemical systems from various points of view: bulk or macro, atomic or micro,
statistical, open or closed, equilibrium or non-equilibrium, each with their inherent
information limits.
G. Organize the global applications of chemical principles to the sub-disciplines of inorganic,
organic, biochemical, analytical and physical chemistry.
H. Apply symbolic notation used to represent elements, compounds & chemical parameters.
I. Write inorganic chemical formulae/nomenclature.
J. Employ dimensional analysis and apply conversion factors.
K. Interpret electron configurations, atomic-molecular spectra, the periodic table, and
periodic trends.
L. Interpret the effect chemical bonding type (ionic, covalent, etc.) has on chemical
reactivity.
M. Interpret and apply pure/hybrid orbital geometry models.
N. Predict products for and balance all categories of chemical equations including redox.
O. Perform analytical composition & mole-based stoichiometric calculations.
P. Interpret applied models used for the solid, liquid, true and colloidal solutions, and the
gaseous states.
Q. Interpret P, V, T applications such as blood gases in human systems.
R. Model and calculate chemical thermodynamic parameters that influence reaction
feasibility, kinetics and energetics.
S. Model and calculate effect/value of acid/base/buffer properties of materials.
T. Apply graphical analysis to Beer’s Law dependent chemical assays.
U. Develop a basic understanding of nuclear reactions and medical tracer applications.
V. Access the Internet for chemical resource information.
W. Interpret MSDS data to scope and develop experimentally safe and prudent procedures &
personal protection.
X. Verify theoretical chemical concepts through application of scientific methodology &
experimental laboratory testing.
Y. Word-process basic technical reports with graphs, tables, and printed structures.
