COMPLETE SPECIFICATION.
Improved Construction of Book.
I, Henny Samver Deax, of 160a, Fleot Street, London, Publisher, do hereby )
declare the uature of this invention and in what manner the same is to be per-
formed, to be particularly .deseribed and ascertained in and by the following
statement:—.
5 This invention relates to that class of book mado up of leaves of different sizes
aud having appropriate reading matter and pictures thereon to form picture
books for use by children, the leaves boing of different widths, and so arranged
that when a small leaf is in contact with a large leaf, part of the latter is
‘exposed and forms together with said small leaf a complete picture the said
10 small leaf when turned away from the large leaf exposing its other face which,
together with the face of the large leaf also exposed or of another whole leaf
forms another complete picture.
Now the object of this invention is to construct such class of book from
material printed dyoa or sinined upon on one side only and.not upon two sides
+15 ofa sheet, as is usual, and folded to form leaves having matter allowing of a
child acquiring either ‘the rudiments of arithmetic in addition to those of
spelling, reading and observing the differences of the form of objects, animals,
birds aud the like, or of obtaining greater amusement by altering or adding to
the picture or other printed matter or in other ways.
20, _ According to my invention T construct my ‘book from doubled leaves of
different widths arranged alternately and bound together so that the narrower
Jeaf can be employed to bide or conceal » portion of the matter on either of the
wider leaves on éach side the fold edge being the outside edge opposite the
binding.
25. My favontion will be clearly understood from the following desoription aided
by the example shown on. the annexed drawings in which 5 :
Figure 1 illustrates a book in open form with matter printed on one wider
leaf whilst the narrower leaf is positioned over the other wider leaf, neither
exposed pages of which show any printed matter; but it must be understood
30 that all the leaves may contain printed, dyed or stained matter.
Figure 2 is a similar view to Figure 1 but with the narrow leaf folded over
und on to the wider leaf containing the printed matter to hide or conceal a
portion of the printed matte: .
Figure 8 is an edge view of the book as bound, in loose formation, the outer
36 leaves and cover being of soparate material to the other leaves each of which
are separate from each other the whole being bound together in the usual
manner, but I may construct such a book from one sheet of material folded so
as to form the cover and the leaves, the whole being held in book form by
binding as is usual. . i

A, B, the pages of the wider déubfidd. leaves, C, D, the pages of narrower
doubled leaves, i in combination’ with Av"dnd 15 forms the pages of the outer
wider leaves and the cover. oe
In indicating lessons in subtraction and_such as I show on the drawings I
print or otherwise apply the fullest number on the page A, indicating such
uumber by separate devices, on the drawings I have shown five children sitting
down and have applied the words ‘If, five. little maidens were sitting down to
sew, how many would be left if three had to go”, as in Figure 1, and to get
the answer ali the child has to do is-to fold over the narrow double leaf on
to the page A when it will cover three of the children leaving only two exposed
as in Figure 2. ren i
In indicating lessons df addition the page A-may have say pictures of five
dolls and the page C may have ove doll and the wording “tive duteh dolls
coming down to tea, another dolly at the door; how many will that be’? so
that on the turning over of the narrow leaf on’ to the page A six dolls will be
exposed. -
Other pictures or wording may be applied to suit the subject under treatment,
but the main object of the narrower leaves is to increase or decrease the number
of the objects on the pages of the wider leaves. a '
Having now particularly described and ascertained the nature of sy said
invention, and in’ what manner the same is to be performed, I declare that
what I claim is: . . ~ tr
Constructing a book from paper or a textile fabric or.Jike material, printed,
dyed or stained on one side only, with pictures, charactors, letters or numerals,
such fabric being folded into double leaves, or to form double leaves of a, book
und also the cover, each altornato. double ‘leaf being of narrowor width, ‘the
wholo being secured together by any binding operation, substantially as and
for the purposo, set. forth. :
