Problem Statement

1. The objective of the competition is to design a chemically powered car which is capable
of travelling along a well-defined path in a specified amount of time. The design should
consist of two mechanisms, namely the Starting and Stopping Mechanisms.
2. Each of the two mechanisms should be powered using only non-conventional sources,
which might consist of chemical, physical and thermodynamic changes, but no
manufactured electrical sources. There is a straight track at competition which is 20m
long and 3m wide.
3. All team will get the specific load to be carried by your car and distance to be travelled at
competition day only.
4. There will be 2 rounds, the safety inspection round and the final run, all team will be
given 2 hours to prepare the reactants for your Chem-E-Car:
a. Safety inspection: Where your Chem-E-Car will be inspected by judges for any
hazard present in it, you must remove it before the run.
b. The final run: All teams will get to run their Chem-E-Car by chit system.

Model specifications
1. Dimensions of the model – The model should comfortably fit into a box of dimensions
40cm*30cm*30cm.
2. Cost Limitations – The expenditure on the design should not exceed INR 10,000.
3. Payload – The model is expected to carry a payload up to 500ml water. The model should
have the provision of accommodating the payload.
4. Team need to bring their own chemicals for the competition.

Performance of the Chem-E-Car

1. All team’s Chem-E-Car will be inspected for safety by judges before the final run, if your
team fails in inspection you must rectify the errors in your Chem-E-Car before the final
run.
2. All team will get 2 runs at competition site, any team failing to start the car on the starting
line within 2 minutes will not get any score in that specific run.
3. Best of 2 runs will be considered as a final score of that team.
4. Viva will be conducted by judges based on your abstract submitted after the final run.
Rules & regulations
1. The model should not employ any battery or pre-manufactured source of energy.
2. The automated mechanism (that is the trigger) can involve chemical or mechanical
processes but should not involve any electronic/electric components.
3. Make sure that the chemicals used do not spill on the track.

Safety & precautions

Each team is required to incorporate appropriate safety measures and equipments in the
chemical preparation and ensure that there are no spills, exposures or hazards. Each team is
expected to follow the following rules –

1) All containers containing chemicals, like beakers, syringes, and bags must be
properly labelled. This includes all the containers holding reactants, intermediates
and products. The labels must properly specify the chemical contained and must
also have the Chem-E-Car Team name on it. It is the responsibility of the team to
carry extra labels if necessary.

2) All teams must possess the personal protective equipment depending on the
possible hazards that could be encountered. Equipment must include lab
coats, safety glasses, gloves.

3) Secure attachments: Chemicals must be securely attached to the car to prevent the
container from tipping over during the competition.

4) Chemical containment hazard: This applies to any solvent, diluents, reactants,

intermediate species or product that is present on your car during operation.
Suitable measures must be taken while handling chemicals in the car preparation
area to prevent human exposure.

5) Electrical hazard: Wiring and exposed electrical components must be electrically

insulated or covered to prevent the possibility of electrical shock or ignition of
any component of a car.
General rules
1. All abstracts must be original. Plagiarism in any form including and not limited to –
a. Replication of old abstracts and models
b. Submission of similar abstracts by teams or falsifying information in the
abstracts will lead to immediate disqualification.
2. The decision regarding final selection of the team’s rests with judges.
3. Final decision-making authority lies with judges.
