Health and Safety

Regulations
Presented by: Feryanda Utami, B.PO
Date: 19th August 2019
OBJECTIVES
At the end of this session, students will be able to:
♥ Correct use of tools, machinery, materials, and safety
equipment.
♥ Create and maintain a safe working environment for all
students and staff.
Our Motto:

SAFETY FIRST!
Hazardous Materials
Routes of Exposure: Some chemicals are not harmful by any route of
exposure, but some are harmful by one or more routes of exposure
GLUES
♥ Premier Glue: Flammable liquid and vapour containing
butadienes and toluene (thinner). Irritant to eyes and skin.
Repeated low-level exposure of some contact cements can
be mutagenic.

♥ Enters the body through skin contact and inhalation.

♥ Can cause dizziness, nausea, headache, eye and skin

irritations. Flammable:
Combustible,
inflammable. Can
ignite/ catch fire easily.
RIGID FOAM
♥ Polyeurethane two-part foam.

♥ Contains isocyanates.

♥ Vapours (during mixing, setting and burning) and dust (during cutting and
grinding) cause eye, skin and respiratory tract irritation, tightness of the chest,
difficulty breathing, headaches, asthma attacks, and reddening, swelling and
blistering of exposed skin on contact.

♥ Can only be smelled at concentrations that are harmful.

♥ React with water to produce CO2.

THINNER
♥ Clear, colourless, highly flammable liquid with a strong odor. Solvent for
glue which can include hexane, xylene, naphtha, etheylbenzene, toluene
and benzene.

♥ Enters the body through skin contact and inhalation. Strong skin irritant.

♥ Can cause light-headedness, dizziness, and worse.

♥ Long term, low-level exposure can cause neurological, olfactory, auditory,

ocular, respiratory and kidney damage.

♥ Is teratogenic.

♥ Vapours are heavier than air.

ACETONE
♥ Clear, colourless liquid.

♥ Highly flammable solvent, dissolves glues, plastics

and rayon fabric

♥ Vapours are heavier than air.

♥ Can explode or cause a flash fire.

RESINS
♥ Polyester and acrylic resins may be carcinogenic /mutagenic, and are highly
flammable liquids with highly flammable vapours.

♥ Contains benzene toluene and styrene.

♥ Vapours are heavier than air.

♥ Vapours and liquid cause eye, nose and throat irritation, headache, nausea, dizziness,
drowsiness, vomiting and central nervous system depression. Liquid resin is irritating to
eyes and skin.

♥ Enters the body through all routes of exposure and targets the central nervous system.

♥ Exothermic when setting.

Promoter for Polyester Resin
♥ Flammable liquid.

♥ Contains methyl ethyl ketone peroxide and dimethyl phthalate.

♥ Enters the body through all routes of exposure.

♥ Severely irritating to eyes, skin, respiratory system. Can cause dizziness if

vapours inhaled and structural changes to the digestive system if
swallowed. Can cause redness, blistering and edema with skin contact.
Hardening Powder for Resins
♥White, flammable dust.

♥Enters the body through inhalation and ingestion.

♥Causes irritation of the respiratory system and

bronchitis symptoms.

♥Dangerous to the environment.

ALCOHOL
♥ Clear, colourless liquid.

♥ Enters body by ingestion, inhalation and absorption through the skin.

♥ Highly flammable.

♥ Irritant to eyes, skin and respiratory tract. Repeated skin contact

results in skin cracking and itching.

♥ Can cause lack of coordination, sleepiness, etc. Can depress the

central nervous system, eyes, nose, and throat and can cause
headache, fatigue and loss of concentration.
DUST
♥ Particles in the air.
♥ Can be comprised of plaster, plastics (grinding laminates
and thermoplastics), chemicals, wood, fiber glass, carbon
fiber, metals, talcum powder, etc.
• Fiberglass dust is an eye, skin, and respiratory tract irritant. It can
cause stinging and itching.
• Wood dust is combustible and increases the risk of cancer.
• Plastic dusts are combustible.
OTHERS
Empty spray cans as well as empty containers from
glues, thinners, resins, etc. are highly flammable
because they contain vapours. Keep away from all
sparks and heat. NEVER heat, cut or puncture an
empty spray can. Leave the lid off of all empty cans.
PERSONAL SAFETY EQUIPMENTS

Safety Glasses
Should be worn at all times

Ear Protection
Should be worn when working with or in the
same room as loud equipment, including cast
cutters

Dust Mask
Should be worn whenever working with or near
dusty materials

Latex or Vinyl Gloves

Should be worn during all contact with patients
and when working with hazardous materials
MACHINE ROOM
♥ You should know how all the operation instruction on to use
each machine before starting using it. If you have no good
knowledge on that, please ask from your instructors.

♥ Use the appropriate machine or tool for the task. You must
know how to STOP a machine in an emergency; where is the
emergency stop button? Can you reach it easily?
ACCIDENT PREVENTION
♥ Always wear appropriate protective clothing and eye wear and ensure that all
machine guards are properly in place.

♥ Do not wear dangling jewellery, rings, watches, ID cards or loose clothing that
could get caught in machinery. Keep long hair tied back.

♥ Do not use machinery when you are tired or under the influence of drugs or
alcohol. Some over-the-counter drugs can make you sleepy. You will be a
hazard to yourself and others

♥ Report any defects in machinery / devices immediately.

♥ Never distract others who are using machinery.

♥ Sitting while in the machine room is not permitted at any time except by
supervisors and under special circumstances which require permission
GRINDING MACHINES
(a.k.a Routers)

These machines spin very, very fast. If something gets caught you will have no
time to think or react. Let it go and turn off the machine.

Prevent accidents by ensuring:

• You have the right attachment for the material you are using.

• Angle and the height of the arm are adjusted to suit you.

• Attachment is not damaged. Report any damage to a teacher and do not

use the attachment.
Sanding sleeves that are ripped are dangerous!
• You are able to let the object go instantly if the machine grabs it.

• Vacuum system is working.

• Attachment is secure. They MUST be tightly screwed on the arm with no

threads showing. Use a wrench to tighten them.

• Machine is not wobbling when you turn it on. The attachment should be
spinning straight.

If there is vibration, increase or decrease the rpm. If the

vibration does not stop, do not use the machine.
Otto Bock Grinder
• This machine can be moved up or down to suit your working
height by turning the top wheel.

• The angle of the arm cannot be adjusted.

• The ventilation arm can be adjusted. There is also ventilation

from the turning arm of the machine.

• There is one emergency stop switch on the left side. It stops

rotation immediately. The red main power switch can also be
used in an emergency to stop the machine immediately.

• NOTE: The red stop button on the control panel does NOT
stop the rotation immediately

• NOTE: The floor pedal starts the machine but does not stop it.
Band Saw Machine
• Check the blade tension and tracking before starting.

• Don’t cut stock that is not flat on the bottom without a jig.

• Keep a balanced stance at the band saw.

• Never clear small pieces while the blade is moving.

• Never use your thumbs to push toward the blade.

• Never back out of a curve cut while the machine is running.

• Hazard: Serious cuts or amputations can occur if the operator

contacts the blade.
