5 CONFIGURATION REQUIREMENTS

REGULAR STRUCTURES - no significant physical discontinuities in plan or vertical

configuration or in their lateral force resisting systems.

IRREGULAR STRUCTURES -

1. Have significant physical discontinuities in configuration or in their lateral force resisting

systems. (Irregular features include but are not limited to those describe in Table 208-9,
208-10)
Note : All occupancy in categories 4 and 5 need to be evaluated only for vertical
irregularity 5 and plan irregularity 1.
2. Structures having features listed in Table 208-9 shall be designated as if having
vertical irregularity.

3. Structures having features listed in Table 208-10 shall be designated as if having plan
irregularity.

VERTICAL IRREGULARITY

1. Stiffness Irregularity (Soft Storey). 208.4.8.3 Item 2

SELECTION OF LATERAL FORCE PROCEDURE

- Any structure may be and certain structures defined below shall be designed using
Dynamic Lateral Force Procedure of Section 208.5.3

208.4.8.1. Simplified Static Procedure 208.5.1 (Occupancy category IV or V)

1. Light framed construction not more than three stories in height.

2. Other buildings not more than two stories in height.

208.4.8.2 Static Lateral Force Procedure (208.5.2)

1. All structures (Regular or Irregular) with occupancy category IV and V in seismic

zone 2
2. Regular Structures under 75m in height with LFRS listed in table 208-11except...
where section 208.4.8.3 item 4 applies (Soil Profile Type Sf and T>0.7s).
 3. Irregular structures not more than 5 stories or 20m in height.
4. Structures having a flexible upper portion supported on a rigid lower
portion where both portions considered separately are classified as being
regular, the average stiffness of the lower portion is at least 10 times the
stiffness of the upper portion. and the period of the entire structure is not
greater than 1.1 times the period of the upper portion considered as a
separate structure fixed at the base.

208.4.8.3 Dynamic Analysis Procedure (208.5.3)

1. Structures 75m or more in height except as permitted in 208.4.2 item 1.

2. Structures having vertical irregularities 1, 2 and 3.
3. Structures more than five stories or 20m in height in seismic zone 4.
4. Structures regular or irregular located on soil profile type Sf that have a period
greater than 0.7 secs.
