Parts of Speech:

1. Noun- it’s a name of a person, a place, a thing, an animal, an idea or an event.

Types of nouns:

a. Proper- it refers to a specific name of a person, a place or a thing. It starts with a


capital letter. (John, Tagaytay, Samsung)
b. Common- it refers to a generic name. (cars, bags, slippers)
c. Count noun- it can be counted. (pens, books, cups)
d. Noncount- it cannot be counted. (milk, water, juice)
e. Abstract- it cannot be seen, smelled, touched, heard, and tasted. (joy, war, love)
f. Collective- it refers to a group of people. (a class of students, a basket of fruit)

2. Pronoun- it replaces a noun.

Two types of pronouns:

Subject- I, you, he, she, it, we, they


Object- me, you, him, her, it, us, them

3. Adjective-it describes a noun or a pronoun.

4. Verb- it is an action word.

5. Adverb- it describes a verb, an adjective or another adverb

Adverb of manner- how an action is done (calmy, happily, knowingly)


Adverb of time- when things happen (before, since, soon)
Adverb of place- where things happen (outside, here, in the garden)
Adverb of degree- to what extent things happen (so, very, extremely, almost)
Adverb of frequency- how often things happen (rarely, seldom, occasionally, once)

6. Preposition- it refers to time and location.

Time- in, on, at, during, until, for, ago, by


Place- above, next to, close to, near (in, on, at)

7. Conjunction- it joins words, phrases, clauses or sentences. (but, while, yet, although)

8. Interjection- it expresses emotion of joy, sorrow, excitement, wonder surprise, pain,


sadness, happiness, and so on (wow, ouch, eww, hey)
