Health insurance has become a very useful aid to people in the event of medical
emergency. This is why most of the buyers look to buy health insurance policy as
comprehensive as possible. There are many add-on covers offered by the
insurance companies that help you to achieve the same. In this article, we look at
some of the most useful add-on covers that you can buy to fine tune your health
insurance policy:

• Critical illness cover: The critical illness cover helps the policyholder in the
event of him being diagnosed with life threatening illnesses like cancer,
kidney failure, third degree burns, stroke, permanent paralysis etc. The
policyholder can make a claim up to the sum assured for the critical illness
cover to avail it in form of a lump sum. It is to be noted that in case of a
pre-existing critical illness, the policyholder will have to wait till the waiting
period is over before his policy starts covering these illnesses.
• Out-patient treatment (OPD) cover: The out-patient expenses cover is a
very useful addition to a health insurance policy. It accounts for the
expenses made towards doctor consultation, lab tests, medicines, dental
care and visual and hearing aid. This is very useful because most of the
people are likely to go for doctor consultation or take medicine on a regular
basis after a certain age.
• Organ donor cover: The advancement in medical technology has enabled
doctors to harvest an organ from a donor’s body to that of the receiver’s.
This allows people suffering from organ failure to go back to normalcy. The
organ donor cover to a health insurance policy will cover the surgical
expenses made towards the donor for organ harvesting. This is very
essential and useful cover as organ donation will not be covered by the
donor’s health insurance policy.
• Daily hospital cash add-on: The daily hospital cash add-on cover accounts
for a lot of out-of-pocket expenses made by the policyholder in the event of
hospitalization. This may include expenses made towards food, commute
etc. The daily hospital cash cover will provide a fixed sum assured for each
day of hospitalization for a maximum of 30 days.
• Medical inflation: The cost for medical expenses increases at over 10%
every year. This may mean that the sum assured for your medical
insurance policy will be inadequate when you make a claim. The medical
inflation cover would make sure that this does not happen. The medical
inflation cover will increase the base sum assured of the policyholder by a
fixed percentage (usually 10%) subject to a maximum of 50% of the sum
assured, irrespective of claims made or not.
