Instructional Today’s lesson will be direct instruction.
Approach

Rationale This lesson is focused on evaluating students’ skills in drawing from observation. It is the
first lesson in the new still life unit. After a short review and demo I will present students
with a task based on what I have presented to them in class and then allow time to start
drawing from observation.

Differentiation I will be intentional in using proximity to view students’ progress after direct instruction.
While interacting with students I will evaluate their understanding of the assignment based
on the work they are creating and modify my instruction appropriately.

Management I will keep students engaged throughout direct instruction by asking them questions about

students work individually, I will use proximity to help students with their work when they
are struggling.

Pre-Lesson Assessment
Teacher will ask students if they know what the words still life and observation mean.
Teacher will choose students who raise their hand to define still life and then have students
discuss in groups what observation means – having one student share with the class.
Lesson Format 1. Hook - (5 minutes) - Today we are going to continue learning how to draw from
observation and to draw still life objects in particular. Teacher turns to Smart
board and presentation that is already up on the board and moves to the slide with
the day’s objective. Who can tell me what a still life is? Student answers. As a
group at your tables discuss what observational drawing means? Student talk at
their tables and then I ask one table representative to share with the class.
2. Teacher Presentation / Assignment - (5-10 minutes) – Today you will start your
first observational drawings. The teacher refers to the presentation slides why
students should practice drawing from life and the steps that should be taken.
Today you will choose 4 objects that you have with you to draw from
observation… At the end of the presentation the teacher will instruct students in
gathering needed materials and have them return to their desks to start working
3. Independent Work - (25-30 minutes) – Students will choose their four objects to
draw from and begin drawing. The teacher will walk the room working 1-on-1
with students who need differentiation and to check on all students’ progress.
4. Closure/Review - (5 minutes) – Before we cleanup turn to your peers at your table
and share what you found challenging about observational drawing. After
students share at their tables the teacher will remind them that they will have time
to finish their observational drawings on Wednesday. Last the teacher will ask
students to clean up their supplies and stand behind their desks when they are
finished.
