TRANSLATION METHODS

I. Review:
What is the different approach in translation?

Reporter will ask two students to repeat what she/he have said.

II. Motivation:
The student will be divided into three groups. Each group will give a certain or a famous line
they know and they will translate it in Tagalog.

III. Lesson Proper:

In our previous discussion, we all know the importance of Translation. And now we will proceed
to different kinds of translation methods which are Word-for-word, Literal, Faithful, Semantic,
Adaptation, Free, and Communicative Translation. Peter Newmark divided the translation
methods into two groups:

The first is the Source Language Text (SL) which emphasizes on the language being translated
from, the second one is the Target Language Text(TL) which emphasizes on the language being
translated to.

SOURCE LANGUAGE TEXT TARGET LANGUAGE TEXT

(SL) (TL)
Word-for-word Translation Adaptation
Literal Translation Free Translation
Faithful Translation Communicative Translation
Semantic Translation

TRANSLATION METHODS under SOURCE LANGUAGE TEXT

 Word-for-word – translating one word at a time, you are rendering a text from one
language to another.
 Literal Translation - Rendering of text from one language to another “word for word”
with or without conveying the sense of the original text.
 Faithful Translation – It attempts to reproduce the precise contextual meaning. It
attempts to be completely faithful of the SL writer. The translator aims to convey the
author’s intention of the text faithfully a possible into another language.
 Semantic Translation – It is the process of using semantic information to aid in the
translation of the data.

TRANSLATION METHODS under TARGET LANGUAGE TEXT

 Adaptation – It is all about communicating meaning through “adapting” the translation

for a particular market or style.
 Free Translation – is a translation that reproduces the general meaning of the original
text. It may or may not closely follow the form or organization of the original.
 Communicative Translation - Rendering the exact contextual meaning of the original in
such way that both language and content are acceptable and comprehensible.

Reporter will ask questions regarding to the translation method.

How do you define word-for-word translation?

How do you define communicative translation?

Can you enumerate the different translation methods?

IV. Generalization
Reporter will summarize the given topic and he/she will ask students to summarize again
what the class have discussed.

I think you have already mastered our topic. Let’s have a quiz.

V. Evaluation (Think-Pair Share)

DIRECTIONS: Find a partner. In a one whole sheet of paper answer the following:
