 Output Noise
At the MT-L 3000 a ticking noise is occasionally reported
Noise sounds like a slight multiple ticking of metal components
It is present at a special simulated test condition of steering in stand still
The Noise is only heard in the cabine if doors and windows are open

Investigation at Test stand and vehicle

Noise could be reproduced at test stand under specific load conditions
At the test stand a direct Alternating Load at Sun gear is necessary
Noise Level is dependant on preload
With applying Lubricant “Anti-Seize” at contact zone Output shaft the noise
disappeared; but there is a risc, that Anti-Seize will be washed out over lifetime
These results were also confirmed at the vehicle

I - Design II - Design

 Summary
 Noise is influenced by
● friction contact of parts
I-design Output Shaft / Planetary Carrier
II-design Output Shaft / Wheel bearing
● Preload of screwed parts
● spline backlash
● cyclic load condition necessary

It can be seen as a “stick slip” effect between the output-shaft

and bearing and movement of spline components

 Assessment
There is no impact to Lifetime, functionality or durability of the axle
The noise is harmless for the further use of vehicle

 Design Improvement
 Lubrication with Anti-Seize at Output-Shaft
● Already introduced in Series Production
Reduction of Spline backlash between output shaft and planetary carrier
● Already introduced in Series Production

 Design Change
Further countermeasures with target to elaminate the noise completely over
the complete Life cycle, needs a Design change
 These actions are in qualification
An extended validation program will ensure the complete functionality
of Wheel Head over Lifetime
These Optimization steps can be introduced only in long term into Series Production
