Universal Design for Learning (UDL): The activity that I have planned for my students allows for them to
learn how to identify the difference between living and non-living organisms. The students are going to learn
this through a narrated PowerPoint. This technology tool I selected for this lesson idea will support all
students because it has visuals and narrated content. The lesson will support and enhance the learning
experience for students in the classroom because they are able to engage in the PowerPoint with their peers
without being left behind. This is especially beneficial for students that have processing disorder or dyslexia. It
gives them a comfortable environment and they wouldn’t have to worry about catching up.
Lesson idea implementation: The teacher will be providing more opportunities for the students to interact
with the concept. For example, the teacher can allow the students to watch the power point while the
teacher sets up for the project. The teacher will then show the students physical objects, that they will
identify as living or non-living. The project will be introduced after the video is shown and it will take 10 to 15
minutes for the students to complete.
The students learning will be assessed on how well the students can identify living and non-living objects. The
final product will be used to inform/differentiate learning by allowing the students to have a visual and an
auditory component through the PowerPoint presentation. I would extend the students learning by allowing
them to come up with other examples of living and non-living organism that they can bring from home to
show the class. I would conclude the lesson by creating an interactive game that will assess the students on
how well the understand the concept of living and non-living organisms. Feedback to the student will be
provided immediately and through technology. The student won’t have to wait and will see the results
immediately allowing the teacher to re-teach and assess concept not understood.
Reflective Practice: After designing the lesson idea, I feel like this activity can create an impact to student
learning because it will allow the students to see the activity and follow along. The student can retrieve the
information from any device that utilizes Microsoft and can accesses to the information regardless if they are
at school. I could have further extended the lesson by allowing the students to discuss and point out other
living and non-living objects in the classroom. Other technology tools that could further enhance this project
would be Nearpod, BrainPOP or excel. Each technology tool would benefit the student by allowing them to
interact and access the tools at there leisure. This would further expand on their knowledge by giving them
tools to review what they don’t understand.
