Three Main Parts

Cell
membrane
• Cell membrane
Nucleus
• The cytoplasm
• The nucleus. Cytoplasm

2
Cell Membrane
• A thin structure that surrounds a cell.
• Three important jobs.
• It protects the inside of a cell
• Gives a cell its shape
• Controls materials into and out of a cell.

3
A cell membrane surrounds each of
these cells.

4
Cytoplasm
• Most cell parts are located in the cytoplasm.
• A gel-like substance that is constantly
moving.

5
The cytoplasm is colored yellow in
this photo.

6
Nucleus
• Control center of a cell.
• The nucleus contains DNA.

7
The nucleus of a cell can be seen by
using a microscope.

8
Organelles
• Small structures that are suspended in the
cytoplasm.
• They work to produce energy, transport materials,
and get rid of waste.

9
Mitochondria
• “Powerhouses" of the cell.
• They release energy that the cell can use.

10
Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER)
• “The highway system of the cell
• A very small network of tubes inside the
cell.

11
Ribosome's
• Small, rounded structures located within the cell.
• Make proteins.

12
Golgi Bodies
• Post office for the cell.
• Package and distribute protein materials to other
parts of the cell.

13
Lysosomes
• Cleanup crew of the cell.
• Contain powerful chemicals that digest nutrient
molecules in the cell.

Plants
Cell Wall • All plant cells have a
cell wall
• Animal cells do not
have a cell wall
• Surrounds the cell
membrane of a plant
cell
• Made of a hard
material called
cellulose

17
The cell wall has three jobs
• Protect the plant cell
• Gives the cell its shape
• Gives the plant cell support

18
Vacuoles
• Small storage spaces in the cytoplasm for food
and waste.
• Plant cells usually have one large vacuole.
• Animal cells may have many small vacuoles.

19
20
Chloroplasts
• Roundish organelles
• They contain a material
called chlorophyll
• Chlorophyll gives a plant
its green color
• Plants use chlorophyll to
make food

What’s the Difference?
• So what are two things that Plant cells have
that animal cells don’t?

What would happen if animals had
