Queenstown Outdoor Activities

Queenstown is a paradise for lovers of the great outdoors. Situated on the shores of Lake Wakatipu in New
Zealand’s South Island, Queenstown offers amazing views of the water and the surrounding snow-capped
mountains of the Southern Alps. Here are just a few of the activities you can do there.

A Hobbit Tour
If you’re a Tolkien fan, then you won’t want to miss this amazing tour of the mountains, glaciers and waterfalls,
where The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit films were made. Starting with a helicopter ride over nearby
Mount Earnslaw, you can experience some of the awe-inspiring scenery which you are sure to recognise from
the films. You will then be transferred to a four-wheel drive vehicle for a closer look at some of the films’ other
locations around Queenstown. The tour does involve some trekking, so you should wear outdoor clothing and
bring some water. But most importantly, don’t forget your camera!

B Cycling at the Rabbit Ridge Bike Resort

Situated in Gibbson Valley, just outside Queenstown, the resort, which offers access to bikes, extends over
40 kilometres of hills and flatter terrain. The bike trails within the Rabbit Ridge resort are popular with cyclists
looking for an adrenaline-filled downhill experience, but if you’re looking for something more relaxed, don’t
worry. There are gentler trails, which are suitable for inexperienced riders, as well as workshops for those new
to the sport. You can take your own bike, but if you don’t have one, there are packages which include bicycles
and helmets. I’d definitely recommend buying one of these complete tours to save money. And if you’re not
feeling very energetic, you can even hire an electric bike!

C Skyline Stargazing
If you love the stars and want something to do in the evening, this is the activity for you. The package includes
a ride up to the top of Bob’s Peak on the Skyline Gondola. The Gondola is a cable car which takes you 450
metres above Queenstown, giving you breathtaking views of Lake Wakatipu below and the mountains in the
distance. From the top of the mountain, you will have clear views of the night sky. It’s perfect for stargazing
and our modern telescopes will let you see the stars as you’ve never seen them before. Make sure you bring
warm clothes for this tour as temperatures can get very low at the top!

D Bungee Jumping at the Kawarau Bungy Centre

Kawarau is well-known by extreme sports enthusiasts because it’s the place where commercial bungee
jumping was born in the 1980s. It involves attaching an elastic rope to your feet and jumping off a tall structure
like a bridge or a cliff. Jumpers have the experience of free-falling to earth but the rope stops them from
actually hitting the ground. Many people say that it’s the most exhilarating experience of their life. At Kawarau,
visitors can go on a tour which explains the history of bungee jumping, but most people go there to jump off
the famous bridge where it all started. And if you’re nervous about jumping on your own, don’t worry – you
can do a tandem jump attached to a friend!
